The St. Louis Cardinals are wasting absolutely no time finding out what Everson Pereira can bring to their roster.
Just two days after claiming the 25-year-old outfielder off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, the starting lineup for Saturday night’s matchup against the Colorado Rockies at Busch Stadium.
Pereira is set to make his Cardinals debut in left field while batting ninth, giving him an immediate opportunity to contribute without being placed too high in the batting order. The move comes as St. Louis looks to build on its recent momentum and push above the .500 mark with another victory.
The Cardinals entered Saturday’s game at 58-58 after defeating Colorado 3-2 in the series opener. Another win would give St. Louis its third consecutive victory and its fifth win in its last six games.
For Pereira, however, Saturday represents something much bigger than another regular-season game.
It is the latest opportunity in a career that has not yet matched the promise he showed earlier in his development.
Pereira Gets Immediate Chance to Prove Himself
Pereira arrives in St. Louis after a brief stint with the White Sox that produced flashes of the power that once made him an intriguing prospect.
In 27 games for Chicago this season, Pereira hit .225 with four home runs, five doubles and 11 RBIs across 80 at-bats. His .722 OPS suggested there was still some offensive potential worth exploring, even if his overall production remained inconsistent.
His final game with the White Sox provided perhaps the clearest glimpse of what he can offer.
On Aug. 2 against the Tampa Bay Rays, Pereira went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs in Chicago’s 9-1 victory. It was the kind of performance that demonstrated why teams continue to be intrigued by his power despite his struggles to establish himself at the major league level.
Yet Chicago designated him for assignment the following day.
The Cardinals quickly took advantage of the opportunity, claiming Pereira off waivers Thursday and moving him onto the active roster almost immediately.
Now, instead of waiting for an extended adjustment period, Pereira has been handed a starting role in his very first game with his new club.
That says plenty about what St. Louis wants to find out.
A Fresh Start for a Former Yankees Prospect
Pereira’s journey to St. Louis has already included stops with multiple organizations.
He previously spent time in the New York Yankees system, where he was regarded as one of the more promising power hitters in the organization. He later moved through the Tampa Bay Rays and White Sox before landing with the Cardinals.
Despite that prospect pedigree, Pereira has struggled to establish himself as a reliable everyday major leaguer.
St. Louis is now hoping a change of scenery can help unlock the talent that made him an intriguing prospect in the first place.
The Cardinals clearly believe there is enough upside to give him an immediate opportunity rather than easing him into the roster.
Batting ninth could be an ideal starting point.
It gives Pereira a chance to settle into his new surroundings without the pressure that comes with hitting in the middle of the order. At the same time, his right-handed power could give St. Louis an interesting weapon at the bottom of the lineup, particularly when facing left-handed pitchers.
Cardinals’ Lineup Gives Pereira Protection
Pereira will be surrounded by several familiar and important pieces of the Cardinals’ lineup.
The batting order against Colorado left-hander Kyle Freeland features JJ Wetherholt leading off, followed by Jordan Walker, Iván Herrera, Alec Burleson, José Fermín, Masyn Winn, Blaze Jordan and Nathan Church.
Pereira will occupy the ninth spot.
Matthew Liberatore is scheduled to start on the mound for St. Louis.
The lineup arrangement allows Pereira to make his debut without carrying the offensive expectations placed on the club’s established hitters. If he can provide some power from the bottom of the order, the Cardinals could quickly discover that they have found a useful addition at little cost.
St. Louis Has Momentum to Protect
Pereira’s arrival also comes at an important moment for the Cardinals.
St. Louis has started to show signs of life after an inconsistent season. The Cardinals entered Saturday at 58-58 following Friday’s 3-2 win over Colorado.
Iván Herrera provided the key offensive blow in the opener by hitting his 13th home run of the season, while Kyle Leahy struck out eight batters over five innings.
The bullpen then delivered four scoreless innings, with Riley O’Brien closing things out for his 28th save.
The victory gave the Cardinals four wins in their last five games and brought them back to the .500 mark.
Although St. Louis remains well behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, the club could still make the August schedule meaningful if it continues to win.
The crowded National League Wild Card picture also gives the Cardinals a reason to keep pushing.
Pereira Could Become an Important Piece
The Cardinals are not simply looking for another outfielder to fill a roster spot.
They are searching for upside.
Pereira offers exactly that because of his raw power and previous prospect reputation. His .225 average with Chicago is not particularly impressive, but the four home runs in only 27 games suggest that there may be an offensive skill worth developing.
His ability to hit the ball with authority could become particularly valuable against left-handed pitching.
And because the Cardinals claimed him off waivers rather than surrendering significant trade capital, the organization can afford to give him an extended opportunity without having to justify a major investment.
That makes the situation relatively low-risk and potentially high-reward.
If Pereira struggles, St. Louis can move on.
If he finds his swing and begins producing consistently, the Cardinals could suddenly have another legitimate power option for the second half of the season.
A Chance to Rewrite His Story
Perhaps the biggest opportunity here belongs to Pereira himself.
He has already experienced the disappointment of being designated for assignment shortly after delivering one of his best performances of the season.
Now he gets a fresh organization, a new clubhouse and an immediate chance to prove he belongs.
The Cardinals have made their intentions clear by putting him directly into the lineup.
They did not claim Pereira simply to stash him on the bench.
They want to see what he can do.
Saturday night at Busch Stadium therefore represents more than a debut. It is the beginning of another opportunity for a former highly regarded prospect to establish himself in the major leagues.
And if Pereira can turn his power flashes into consistent production, the Cardinals may look back at this waiver claim as one of the more intriguing moves of their season.
