The St. Louis Cardinals delivered one of their most dominant performances of the season on Friday night, overwhelming the Chicago Cubs with a relentless offensive display in a commanding 17-1 victory at Wrigley Field. Powered by 17 hits and a pair of three-run home runs, the Cardinals snapped the Cubs’ five-game winning streak while strengthening their momentum in the National League Central race.
St. Louis improved its recent form by winning for the fourth time in its last five games, while handing Chicago one of its most lopsided defeats of the season. The Cardinals’ lineup produced runs in nearly every inning, leaving the Cubs with no opportunity to recover after an early offensive explosion.
Church and Winn Lead Offensive Barrage
Rookie outfielder Nathan Church and shortstop Masyn Winn were the biggest stars of the night, each blasting three-run home runs to headline the Cardinals’ offensive outburst.
Church continued his impressive stretch at the plate by launching his third home run in four games. The young center fielder has now driven in eight runs during that span, further establishing himself as an emerging contributor in the middle of St. Louis’ lineup.

First baseman Alec Burleson matched Winn with two hits and four RBIs of his own, while Ivan Herrera and Blaze Jordan each collected three hits as virtually every Cardinals hitter contributed to the offensive showcase.
Pallante Controls Cubs Lineup
While the offense grabbed most of the headlines, Cardinals starter Andre Pallante quietly turned in another strong outing on the mound.
Pallante improved to 10-5 on the season after limiting Chicago to just five hits and one walk across 5⅔ innings. He consistently kept Cubs hitters off balance, allowing his teammates to build an enormous lead without any serious threat of a comeback.
Peterson Struggles in Cubs Debut Stretch
The game quickly unraveled for Cubs starter David Peterson, who endured the toughest outing of his season.
Making only his second start since being acquired from the New York Mets on June 25, Peterson surrendered a career-high 10 earned runs on nine hits in just 3⅔ innings.

St. Louis continued piling on with three runs in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth, and another run in the seventh, building a remarkable 17-0 advantage before Chicago finally avoided the shutout.
The Cardinals’ 17-run output marked their largest lead over an opponent since building an 18-0 advantage against the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 2022.
Cubs Suffer Historic Reversal
The loss proved especially stunning considering Chicago entered the contest riding a five-game winning streak and fresh off one of the most dominant victories in franchise history.
Just two days earlier, the Cubs had crushed the San Diego Padres 23-3, winning by 20 runs.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Chicago became the first Major League team ever to win a game by 20 or more runs and then lose its very next game by 10 or more runs, creating one of baseball’s most remarkable statistical turnarounds.
Veteran Alex Bregman provided the Cubs’ lone bright spot offensively, recording two hits and driving in Chicago’s only run with a double in the seventh inning.
Cardinals Build Momentum
The convincing victory highlighted the growing confidence within the Cardinals’ clubhouse as several young players continue making significant contributions alongside established veterans.
