The St. Louis Cardinals gained valuable young talent in exchange for trading Lars Nootbaar to the Arizona Diamondbacks before the MLB trade deadline, adding a pair of promising pitching prospects who could strengthen the organization’s long-term outlook.
Among the players acquired was right-handed pitcher Daniel Eagen, previously ranked as Arizona’s No. 5 prospect. Following the trade, Eagen immediately slotted into the Cardinals’ prospect rankings as the organization’s No. 17 overall prospect, reflecting the confidence the club has in his future potential. Known for his power arm and developing repertoire, Eagen is viewed as a pitcher capable of progressing through the minor leagues while offering upside as either a starting pitcher or high-impact reliever at the major league level.
The Cardinals also received left-handed pitcher Sandro Santana, Arizona’s former No. 26 prospect, who now ranks as the No. 22 prospect in the St. Louis farm system. Santana brings another quality arm to an organization that has emphasized building pitching depth under its evolving front-office strategy. His left-handed profile and developmental upside provide the Cardinals with another intriguing option for the future.
In addition to Eagen and Santana, the trade package includes a player to be named later, giving St. Louis another asset that could further increase the overall value of the deal depending on who is eventually selected.
The acquisition of multiple young pitchers aligns with the Cardinals’ long-term organizational direction as the club continues reshaping its roster.
