Top prospect JJ Wetherholt has quickly become one of the biggest bright spots for the St. Louis Cardinals this season, and his impressive early production is already sparking conversations about a potential long-term commitment from the organization.
Despite entering the year with tempered expectations, St. Louis has surprised much of baseball with an outstanding 23-15 start. The club currently sits atop the National League Wild Card standings and recently guaranteed at least a split in its series against the San Diego Padres. A major reason for that success has been the immediate impact of Wetherholt, who has seamlessly transitioned into a key role at the major league level.
The rookie infielder has looked remarkably polished for a first-year player. Through the opening stretch of the season, Wetherholt has already launched seven home runs, driven in 20 runs, and posted a strong .764 OPS. His consistency at the plate, combined with his composure in high-pressure situations, has helped him earn the team’s leadoff spot — a role he has embraced with confidence and maturity.
Baseball analysts are beginning to view Wetherholt not simply as a promising young player, but as a potential franchise cornerstone. MLB.com’s Will Leitch recently evaluated which Cardinals players could be next in line for a contract extension, and Wetherholt immediately stood out as the most logical candidate.
Leitch emphasized how advanced the young infielder already appears at the major league level, noting that Wetherholt has played with the poise and comfort of a seasoned veteran almost from the moment he debuted. According to the MLB.com writer, the Cardinals are likely envisioning Wetherholt as a foundational piece for the organization over the next several seasons.
The possibility of an early extension raises an interesting question for St. Louis: should the franchise attempt to secure Wetherholt long term before his value skyrockets further? If he continues progressing toward superstardom, the cost of keeping him through his prime years could become significantly more expensive. However, signing him early could allow the Cardinals to lock in one of baseball’s emerging young talents at a more team-friendly price.
At the same time, there is understandable caution involved. Wetherholt is still in the early stages of his MLB career, and the Cardinals already control him for several seasons under standard team control rules. The organization could choose to simply enjoy those affordable years and revisit extension talks later. Still, if both sides can agree on terms that provide financial security for the player while giving the team additional years of control at a reasonable cost, a deal could make sense for everyone involved.
For now, Wetherholt’s performance continues to justify the growing excitement surrounding him. If his current trajectory continues, discussions about a future extension are only going to become louder in St. Louis.
