With the MLB trade deadline drawing closer, the Chicago Cubs continue to be linked to several starting pitchers as they search for reinforcements to stabilize an injury-riddled rotation. Among the most intriguing names emerging in trade discussions is New York Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta, a proven veteran who could provide the postseason-caliber arm Chicago has been seeking.
The Cubs’ need for starting pitching has become one of the organization’s top priorities. Injuries have depleted the rotation throughout the season, leaving president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer under pressure to acquire at least one dependable starter capable of strengthening the club’s playoff push.
According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, Chicago stands out as one of the most logical destinations for Peralta should the Mets decide to move the veteran before the deadline.
Sammon described the Cubs as an “obvious” landing spot, noting that manager Craig Counsell previously coached Peralta during their successful years together in Milwaukee. That existing relationship could make Chicago an attractive destination for the experienced right-hander while also easing his transition into a new clubhouse.
Although Peralta’s 2026 campaign has featured some inconsistency, he remains one of baseball’s more reliable power pitchers with the experience to perform in high-pressure situations. Across 19 starts this season, the two-time All-Star has posted a 4.68 ERA while continuing to demonstrate the swing-and-miss ability that has made him a valuable rotation piece throughout his career.
One recent development also highlights Peralta’s growing confidence and leadership on the mound. During his latest outing against the Atlanta Braves, the veteran elected to call portions of his own game using the PitchCom communication system rather than relying entirely on his catcher. The adjustment reflected his willingness to take greater control of his pitching strategy as the season progresses.
If the Mets officially become sellers, Peralta is expected to attract significant interest from contenders across Major League Baseball. However, Chicago’s urgent need for rotation help, combined with Counsell’s familiarity with the veteran pitcher, could position the Cubs as one of the frontrunners in any potential negotiations.
For Chicago, the appeal extends beyond Peralta’s talent. Because he is playing on an expiring contract, acquiring him would not require a long-term financial commitment, making him an attractive rental option for a team focused on maximizing its chances of making a deep postseason run without significantly impacting future payroll flexibility.
