Kevin Gausman may have only recently joined the Chicago Cubs, but his family is already settling into a major change after the veteran right-hander was traded away from the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this month.
While Gausman has been focused on adjusting to a new pitching staff, new teammates and a new league environment, his wife, Taylor Gausman, offered fans a small glimpse into the family’s transition with a six-word message on Instagram.
The post came Sunday as the Gausman family continued adjusting to life in Chicago. Taylor shared a collection of photographs documenting their recent experiences and captioned the post: “photo dump because life’s been wild .” The simple six-word message quickly attracted attention, collecting more than 8,000 likes within its first day.
Although the post was casual, the reaction in the comments demonstrated just how much the Gausman family meant to people in Toronto.
Gausman spent the previous several seasons with the Blue Jays and became one of the most respected members of the organization. When Toronto traded him to Chicago, the move represented not only a significant baseball change but also a personal adjustment for the pitcher and his family.
The Cubs acquired Gausman from Toronto on August 2 in exchange for outfielder Brett Bateman and infielder Ty Southisene. The trade was part of Chicago’s effort to strengthen its pitching staff for the stretch run and postseason push.
Toronto fans were understandably emotional about the deal. Many took to Taylor’s Instagram post to express how much they missed the Gausman family and to wish them well in Chicago.
Several comments reflected the same sentiment: Toronto supporters were happy to see the family beginning to settle into their new surroundings but still hoped that Gausman might eventually return to the Blue Jays.
The emotional reaction was understandable because Gausman had become an important figure in Toronto’s clubhouse and community. His departure came shortly after he had pitched for the Blue Jays against the St. Louis Cardinals on August 1, making the trade particularly sudden from the perspective of fans.
Gausman had also been a major part of Toronto’s recent success. The right-hander helped the Blue Jays reach the 2025 World Series, posting a 2-3 record with a 2.93 ERA across six postseason starts. Toronto ultimately lost the championship series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cubs, meanwhile, had been interested in Gausman for years. Chicago president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said the organization had asked Toronto about his availability multiple times before finally completing the deal.
The Cubs viewed the veteran pitcher as an important addition to a rotation dealing with injuries and needing additional experience for the postseason race. At the time of the trade, Chicago was sitting near the top of the National League wild-card standings.
Gausman made his transition to Chicago shortly after the trade and quickly became part of the Cubs’ rotation. His first few outings with his new club have provided both encouraging moments and challenges.
In his second start for Chicago, Gausman faced the Washington Nationals on August 13. The outing proved difficult, as Washington scored six runs against him over 4⅔ innings. Rookie Abimelec Ortiz hit a three-run home run during the Nationals’ offensive attack, and Washington went on to defeat Chicago 7-0.
Despite that difficult outing, Gausman’s arrival remains an important part of the Cubs’ attempt to strengthen their pitching staff.
The veteran right-hander entered the season with considerable experience and a reputation for durability. Before the trade, he had made at least 31 starts and thrown at least 174⅔ innings in each of the previous five seasons, making his consistency particularly valuable to a Cubs team dealing with pitching uncertainty.
The timing of the trade also adds another layer to the family’s adjustment. Gausman was moved during the season rather than during the offseason, meaning Taylor and the rest of the family had to adapt to a new city and organization while the baseball season was already underway.
That appears to be the reason Taylor’s simple “photo dump” attracted so much attention. The post offered a behind-the-scenes look at a family navigating a hectic period while also showing that they are beginning to embrace their new surroundings.
Toronto fans, however, have clearly not forgotten them.
Many supporters used the comment section to tell Taylor that the family is still missed in Canada. Some specifically expressed hope that Gausman could return to Toronto after his time with Chicago, while others simply wished the family success with the Cubs.
For now, though, Gausman’s attention is on helping Chicago.
The Cubs acquired him with the expectation that his experience and ability to handle a heavy workload could strengthen their rotation during an important stretch of the season. Chicago is looking to remain in contention and make a deep postseason run, giving Gausman another opportunity to compete for a championship.
For Taylor, the Instagram post suggests that the family is taking the transition one day at a time.
What began as a six-word caption became a reminder of how quickly life can change for an MLB family. One moment, the Gausmans were established members of the Toronto baseball community; shortly afterward, they were beginning a new chapter at Wrigley Field.
While Toronto fans continue to miss the family, Chicago supporters will be hoping the Gausmans’ latest chapter becomes a successful one and that Kevin Gausman’s arm can help the Cubs turn their postseason ambitions into reality.
