When asked what Auburn has been lacking since his departure in 2020, Malzahn avoided criticism or controversy. Instead, he took a diplomatic approach, choosing to focus on the future rather than the past. He emphasized that while he has been focused on his own career, he is optimistic that Golesh has what it takes to restore the Tigers to prominence.

Auburn’s journey since Malzahn’s exit has been anything but smooth. Despite consistent winning seasons during his tenure, the program struggled to maintain stability afterward. Bryan Harsin endured a short and turbulent stint, failing to establish direction or success. His tenure was followed by Hugh Freeze, who initially brought excitement but ultimately could not deliver results, ending with back-to-back losing seasons and disappointing performances that led to his departure.

Now, the responsibility of reviving the program falls on Golesh, a relatively young coach tasked with returning Auburn to national relevance and championship contention. Malzahn, who recently stepped away from coaching after serving as offensive coordinator at Florida State Seminoles football, has already seen encouraging signs.

After attending a spring practice session, Malzahn noted the team’s energy and intensity, saying the players were active and engaged in a way that reminded him of Auburn’s traditional identity. While strong practices don’t always translate directly into wins, he believes the foundation is being set correctly.

More importantly, Malzahn spoke highly of Golesh’s character and coaching credentials, describing him as a knowledgeable and respected football mind who is guiding the program in the right direction. He made it clear that he will continue to support Auburn and hopes to see the new leadership succeed.

For a fan base eager for a turnaround after several disappointing seasons, Malzahn’s endorsement of Golesh provides a sense of optimism that better days could be ahead on the Plains
