New York Mets reliever Jefry Yan is enjoying a remarkable turnaround in his baseball career, and his latest personal milestone comes during one of the most memorable stretches of his professional life.
Yan celebrated his 30th birthday on August 17, just days after recording his first major-league victory and establishing himself as an intriguing new weapon in the Mets’ bullpen. The timing is especially meaningful given the long and unconventional journey he took to finally reach the major leagues.
Yan was originally signed by the Los Angeles Angels as a teenager, but his development was interrupted by injuries, including Tommy John surgery. His career eventually took him through several organizations and leagues as he continued searching for another opportunity in affiliated baseball.
His journey included time in the Miami Marlins organization, a stint playing professionally in Japan and an opportunity with the Colorado Rockies before he ultimately joined the Mets organization in 2025.
New York’s decision to give him another opportunity has already started to look like a potentially significant move.
After producing impressive strikeout numbers in the minor leagues, Yan received his first MLB promotion in August. He made his major-league debut on August 5 against the Cleveland Guardians and immediately caught the attention of baseball fans.
After striking out Angel Martínez, Yan unleashed an energetic celebration in which he jumped into the air, spread his legs and slapped the mound. The unusual celebration quickly went viral and became part of his growing identity with the Mets.
However, Yan’s value is not limited to his personality.
The left-handed pitcher has demonstrated an ability to miss bats at a very high rate. Earlier in the season in the minors, he struck out 63 batters in just 33⅓ innings. His biggest challenge has been command, as he also issued 24 walks during that stretch.

The Mets eventually won 5-4 on Francisco Lindor’s ninth-inning walk-off single, with Yan earning the first victory of his major-league career.
That outing also produced another entertaining moment.
Yan appeared to strike out Nasim Nuñez and immediately began his trademark celebration. The pitch, however, was initially ruled a ball. Yan challenged the call using the Automated Ball-Strike system, but the ruling was upheld.
Rather than allowing the moment to become embarrassing, Yan simply came back and struck Nuñez out on the next pitch. The sequence added another memorable chapter to his rapidly growing Mets story.
The celebration itself is not something Yan invented after reaching the majors. He had developed a reputation for his energetic reactions during his minor-league career, where teammates and coaches had already become accustomed to his enthusiasm on the mound.
His personality has helped make him a fan favorite, but his journey is what makes his current success particularly compelling.

The Mets’ improved performance since the trade deadline has created additional opportunities for players such as Yan. His strikeout ability gives manager Carlos Mendoza another option when facing dangerous hitters late in games.
