The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team battled through difficult weather conditions Saturday but could not overcome Kansas State, falling 3-1 in the final match of the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff at Lower Campus Field in Manoa.
The contest was played under increasingly challenging conditions as Hurricane Lala approached the Hawaiian Islands, bringing strong winds and raising concerns about safety. Despite the deteriorating weather, officials allowed the match to proceed, giving both teams an opportunity to complete their final game of the weekend.
Hawaii started brightly and gave its home crowd an early reason to celebrate. Forward Anuhea Aluli found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, putting the Rainbow Wahine ahead and giving them momentum early in the contest.
The early advantage, however, did not last.
Kansas State gradually settled into the match and began creating more opportunities as the first half progressed. The Wildcats eventually found the equalizer in the 27th minute, bringing the game level and shifting momentum in their direction.
The two teams went into halftime tied, but Kansas State came out stronger after the break. The Wildcats scored again in the second half to take a 2-1 lead before adding another goal later in the match to establish a two-goal cushion.
Hawaii continued to compete despite the difficult conditions but was unable to generate enough attacking pressure to erase the deficit. Kansas State ultimately held on for a 3-1 victory and closed the weekend with a strong result on the road.
Nagamine acknowledged the quality of the Wildcats while also praising her players for competing through an unusually difficult environment.
The weather became a major storyline surrounding the match. As Hurricane Lala approached, powerful winds made conditions increasingly challenging for everyone at the stadium. The weather was severe enough that officials decided to cancel the television broadcast on KFVE because of concerns for the safety of the production crew.
The cancellation did not stop supporters from attending. A sizable group of Hawaii fans still made the trip to Lower Campus Field despite the storm threat and difficult conditions.
Nagamine expressed her appreciation for those supporters, saying their willingness to attend despite the weather demonstrated the commitment of the Rainbow Wahine fan base.
For Hawaii, the loss brought the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff to a difficult conclusion, but the team can take positives from the weekend and turn its attention toward the remainder of the schedule.
The Rainbow Wahine will return to action Thursday when they host Western Michigan. The match is scheduled to be televised on KFVE, with coverage expected to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The upcoming contest will give Hawaii an immediate opportunity to respond following the Kansas State defeat. With the stormy weekend behind them, the Rainbow Wahine will hope for better conditions and a stronger result when Western Michigan arrives in Manoa.
The Kansas State victory also highlighted the Wildcats’ ability to handle difficult circumstances. After falling behind early, Kansas State remained composed, equalized before halftime and then controlled the second half well enough to complete the comeback.
For Hawaii, the challenge was not simply facing a strong opponent but doing so while dealing with difficult weather, strong winds and the uncertainty created by Hurricane Lala’s approach.
Despite the defeat, Nagamine said she was proud of her team for completing the match under such challenging circumstances. She also expressed relief that the game was able to be played, allowing visiting teams from the mainland to complete their scheduled matches during the tournament weekend.
The Rainbow Wahine will now look to put the difficult night behind them and focus on their next challenge. Thursday’s meeting with Western Michigan offers Hawaii a chance to regroup, build on the positive moments from the tournament and return to the winning path.
