Breaking News: Kentucky Coaching Pursuit Ends with Crawford

The Kentucky Wildcats will continue their search for a new assistant coach after former NBA star Jamal Crawford officially declined an opportunity to join Mark Pope’s coaching staff, citing professional commitments and poor timing rather than a lack of interest in coaching.

Jamal Crawford of Clippers wins NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award

Speaking with KSR, the three-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year revealed that although he seriously considered Pope’s offer, he ultimately felt unable to accept the position because of his existing obligations. Crawford is currently under contract with NBC as one of the network’s lead analysts for its NBA coverage, a role he began this past season, while also serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Rainier Beach High School in Seattle.

Crawford emphasized that his decision had nothing to do with Kentucky or its basketball program, insisting that he still plans to enter college coaching in the future when the timing is more favorable.

“If this were a different time, there’s no doubt. There’s zero doubt,” Crawford said. “I have such respect for Coach Pope and Coach Mo (Williams), but with everything I’m doing right now, and I’m under contract with NBC, I think that takes precedent. I can’t do it right now. But I have no doubt I will be a coach in the future. Zero.”

The former All-Star made it clear that the Wildcats’ opportunity was appealing, but honoring his broadcasting contract and balancing his other responsibilities left him unable to make the transition to the college sidelines at this point in his career.

Despite turning down the position, Crawford expressed unwavering confidence in Kentucky’s direction under first-year head coach Mark Pope. He praised Pope’s leadership, character, and the way the Wildcats’ coaching staff is being assembled, highlighting the addition of talented newcomers, including transfer guard Zoom Diallo, as reasons for optimism entering the upcoming season.

Crawford described Pope as a coach of integrity and said Kentucky remains one of the premier destinations in college basketball, noting that the program’s rich tradition, passionate fan base, and national reputation continue to make it one of the sport’s elite programs.

“Coach Pope’s a man of honor. He’s a man of respect,” Crawford said. “His staff is being built the right way with the people he has around him. It’s an exciting time. And it’s Kentucky. Kentucky is one of the gold standards of college basketball. They’ll always be able to recruit themselves, and they’ll always have one of the best fan bases in the world.”

While Crawford’s decision closes the door on a potential high-profile addition to Kentucky’s bench, his comments suggest the relationship between himself and the Wildcats remains positive. Meanwhile, Pope and Kentucky will continue searching for another assistant as they prepare for a season in which expectations remain high despite missing out on the former NBA standout.
