The University of Kentucky has officially appointed J Batt as its new Chief Executive Officer of Champions Blue LLC and the next Athletics Director, marking a major leadership transition for UK Athletics as the program enters a new era of college sports management.

Michigan State On Verge of Losing AD J Batt to Kentucky

Batt arrives in Lexington after serving as Vice President and Athletic Director at Michigan State, and previously holding the same role at Georgia Tech. He also spent several years in senior leadership positions at the University of Alabama, building a résumé that spans some of the most prominent athletic departments in the country.

In announcing the hire, Kentucky President Eli Capilouto praised Batt’s track record in fundraising and facility development, noting his ability to secure major financial commitments and strategically invest in programs designed to elevate both revenue and competitive success. Capilouto also emphasized Batt’s commitment to student-athlete development, both on the field and in preparing athletes for life beyond sports.

Batt expressed enthusiasm about joining the Wildcats, highlighting Kentucky’s “championship standard” and pledging to uphold and strengthen the program’s competitive excellence. He stressed that success in modern college athletics requires collaboration across donors, staff, coaches, and supporters, while also adapting to the rapidly evolving collegiate sports landscape.

During his tenure at Michigan State, Batt played a key role in securing a historic financial commitment exceeding $400 million, the largest single donation in college athletics history. He also helped establish Spartan Ventures, a nonprofit initiative designed to expand revenue streams and partnerships, while contributing to infrastructure development around the university’s football program.

Academically and competitively, Michigan State student-athletes achieved record-breaking performance levels under his leadership, including the highest department-wide GPA in school history and multiple NCAA tournament appearances across sports. At Georgia Tech, Batt oversaw a period of strong competitive success, where the school reached postseason play across nearly all major sports while significantly increasing fundraising totals.

Beyond campus leadership, Batt has also been active in national college athletics governance, including participation in the House Settlement Implementation Committee and his role as chair of the College Football Hall of Fame, positioning him as an influential voice during a period of major structural change in collegiate sports.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was part of a national championship soccer team, Batt brings both academic and athletic experience to his administrative career. He and his family are expected to formally join the Kentucky community later this summer as he begins the transition into his new role.

With his appointment, Kentucky signals a continued focus on financial growth, competitive excellence, and long-term program stability as Batt prepares to lead the Wildcats into a new chapter of college athletics.
