Kentucky’s pursuit of Michigan State transfer Jaxon Kohler has officially come to an end, but the Wildcats’ failure to land the veteran forward may have actually made their remaining offseason plans much clearer. Kohler has committed to BYU, choosing a return closer to home after Kentucky, Kansas and Louisville were among the programs showing interest.
For Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, however, the decision does not necessarily represent a major setback. Instead, it appears to leave the Wildcats with a much more obvious target: former Missouri forward Mark Mitchell.
Kohler had emerged as a potential option for Kentucky after meeting with Pope, and the conversation reportedly gave the Wildcats some optimism about their chances. BYU, though, had been viewed as a strong contender for the forward throughout the process, and ultimately secured his commitment.
While Kohler would have brought significant value to Kentucky’s frontcourt, particularly with his ability to rebound, score around the basket and contribute near double-double numbers, his decision to choose BYU leaves Pope’s recruiting strategy looking increasingly focused on Mitchell.
Mitchell remains in a complicated situation as he waits for a court decision regarding his eligibility for a potential fifth college season. His status has become one of the biggest remaining storylines surrounding Kentucky’s roster, and the Wildcats appear prepared to pursue him aggressively if he receives clearance to play another season.
Mark Mitchell Could Be the Final Piece Kentucky Needs
From a basketball standpoint, Mitchell may arguably be an even better fit for what Pope wants to accomplish at Kentucky. The former Missouri standout has demonstrated that he can carry a significant offensive load while also providing versatility and experience on both ends of the floor.
His familiarity with high-level SEC competition could also make his transition to Lexington relatively smooth. Rather than needing significant time to adjust to the physicality and pace of the conference, Mitchell already understands what it takes to succeed against SEC opponents.
That experience could be especially valuable for a Kentucky team that is already building considerable expectations around its 2026-27 roster.
The Wildcats have added significant talent this offseason, including Milan Momcilovic, and the potential addition of Mitchell would give Pope another proven piece capable of immediately impacting the lineup.
Kohler’s decision may therefore be disappointing for Kentucky fans, but it does not necessarily change the bigger picture. If anything, it makes the importance of Mitchell’s eligibility situation even more obvious.
Potential Kentucky Lineup Could Be Loaded
Should Mitchell ultimately receive approval for a fifth season and choose Kentucky, the Wildcats could have one of the most intriguing frontcourts in college basketball.
Mitchell could potentially slide into the power-forward role, with Momcilovic operating at the three and Malachi Moreno anchoring the interior at center. That combination would give Kentucky a blend of scoring, size, versatility and experience that could make the Wildcats a serious national contender.
Of course, none of that is guaranteed. Mitchell has not committed to Kentucky, and his eligibility remains tied to the ongoing legal battle. Until those issues are resolved, Pope cannot assume that Mitchell will be available.
Still, the sequence of events is difficult for Kentucky supporters to ignore.
Kohler was one possible addition. Mitchell has seemingly been the bigger priority for Pope for some time. Now that Kohler is headed to BYU, there is little reason to believe Kentucky will suddenly abandon its pursuit of Mitchell.
If Mitchell receives the green light to return for a fifth season, Kentucky could quickly become one of the most aggressive programs pursuing him.
For Big Blue Nation, the loss of Kohler is hardly the end of the world. Pope appears to have identified the player he wants to complete his roster, and the next major development could come down to whether Mitchell is cleared to play.
If that happens, Kentucky could move quickly and a disappointing transfer decision involving Kohler could soon be forgotten if Pope lands Mitchell instead.
