The Seattle Mariners enter their series against the Philadelphia Phillies with plenty to prove after a disappointing loss, but the matchup offers an immediate opportunity to make a statement against one of baseball’s hottest teams.
Seattle had been building momentum, winning five of its previous seven games and strengthening its push for a postseason spot before the Chicago Cubs delivered a stunning 19-2 blowout on Sunday. The Mariners will now have to quickly put that defeat behind them as they prepare to face a Phillies club riding a nine-game winning streak.
The stakes are high for Seattle. Philadelphia arrives in town playing with tremendous confidence, while the Mariners remain focused on keeping pace in the American League playoff race. A strong series against one of the National League’s top contenders could provide Seattle with an important boost at a crucial point in the season.
Despite Sunday’s lopsided defeat, there was at least one notable achievement for the Mariners. Randy Arozarena continued his impressive power-speed combination by hitting a leadoff home run for the second consecutive game. The blast secured his sixth straight season with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, further highlighting his importance to Seattle’s lineup.
Unfortunately for the Mariners, Arozarena’s accomplishment was overshadowed by an otherwise difficult afternoon.
Seattle’s pitching staff struggled throughout the game, while the short-handed bullpen was stretched to its limits. Left-hander Jose A. Ferrer was required to record five outs, and the Mariners ultimately had to turn to position players to finish the blowout.
That workload could become significant as Seattle begins its series against Philadelphia.
The Phillies possess one of the most dangerous lineups in the league, led by power hitters such as Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. Both left-handed sluggers have the ability to change a game with one swing, meaning Seattle’s pitching staff will need to be much sharper than it was against Chicago.
Mariners manager Dan Wilson acknowledged the difficult circumstances surrounding Sunday’s game. With the contest quickly getting out of hand, Seattle was forced to manage its pitching resources with the upcoming series in mind.
Now, the Mariners have a chance to respond.
Philadelphia comes into Seattle after producing one of the most dramatic wins of its season. The Phillies erased a four-run deficit against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, scoring five times in the ninth inning to complete a stunning 6-4 comeback.
Schwarber delivered the decisive blow, crushing a 459-foot, two-run home run to center field and extending Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine games.
That comeback perfectly illustrates the challenge facing Seattle. The Phillies have repeatedly demonstrated that they cannot be counted out, even when they appear to be on the verge of defeat.
Philadelphia’s recent success has not been built solely on home runs. The Phillies have received strong performances from their starting rotation, improved defensive play and timely hitting throughout the lineup. That balanced approach has helped them establish a four-game cushion in the National League wild-card race while keeping them within striking distance of first place in the NL East.
For Seattle, stopping that momentum will require a complete performance.
Monday’s series opener features an important pitching matchup between Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert and Phillies ace Zack Wheeler.
Gilbert enters the contest at 10-7 with a 3.35 ERA and has won his last two starts. He most recently picked up a victory against Milwaukee, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings while recording five strikeouts.
However, Gilbert has struggled against Philadelphia in the past. He is 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA in four career starts against the Phillies, making this another opportunity for the Mariners starter to rewrite his history against a dangerous opponent.
Wheeler brings a 10-4 record and 2.92 ERA into the matchup. Although he has dropped his last three decisions, he pitched effectively in his most recent start, allowing only two runs on two hits against Miami over five innings while striking out seven.
Wheeler has also enjoyed success against Seattle, going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his previous start against the Mariners.
That makes the opening game particularly important for Seattle. A strong outing from Gilbert could settle the pitching staff after Sunday’s disaster and give the Mariners’ offense an opportunity to attack a Philadelphia team that has been nearly unstoppable during its current run.
The Mariners cannot afford to dwell on the 19-2 loss. Their playoff ambitions remain alive, and the arrival of the Phillies provides an immediate test of whether Seattle can respond to adversity.
