The New York Mets have released veteran infielder Christian Arroyo, bringing an end to his latest stint with the organization and leaving the former Top-100 prospect searching for another opportunity with the 2026 minor league season still underway.
Arroyo, 31, had been playing for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets and was hitting .279/.331/.435 across 261 plate appearances before New York decided to move on. Although his production was respectable at the plate, the organization ultimately chose to release the seven-year major league veteran after he failed to secure a path back to the big leagues.
The Mets initially signed Arroyo to a minor league contract in January. He received an opportunity to compete during spring training, appearing in 12 Grapefruit League games. However, he struggled to establish himself, batting just .222 (6-for-27) with one home run, three walks and five strikeouts.
New York released Arroyo from his contract on June 1, but the two sides reunited just one day later when he re-signed with the organization. He subsequently returned to Syracuse and continued his season in Triple-A.
Despite his experience and offensive ability, Arroyo has not appeared in a major league game since 2023. His next MLB plate appearance, whenever it comes, will therefore mark his return to the majors after an extended absence.
Arroyo entered professional baseball with considerable expectations. The San Francisco Giants selected him with the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft, and he quickly established himself as one of the organization’s top prospects. He eventually reached the majors with San Francisco in 2017.
However, Arroyo was unable to turn his prospect status into sustained major league success. He also spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians and Boston Red Sox, but never appeared in more than 87 games or accumulated more than 300 plate appearances in a single MLB season.
Over 295 major league games, Arroyo has posted a career .252/.299/.394 batting line with 24 home runs and 120 RBIs. His ability to play multiple infield positions has helped him remain valuable to organizations even when his offensive production has fluctuated.
The Mets represent Arroyo’s third organization in the past three seasons, highlighting how much of his recent career has been spent trying to work his way back toward the majors through Triple-A.
His 2024 season with the Milwaukee Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate, the Nashville Sounds, was relatively modest. Arroyo appeared in 30 games and hit .237/.305/.360, while an injury cost him nearly two months during the first half of the season.
Injuries continued to interrupt his progress in 2025. Arroyo missed 20 days in April and was sidelined throughout July because of separate ailments. When healthy, however, he showed that he could still produce at the minor league level.
With the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Arroyo enjoyed one of his better recent stretches. In 45 games, he hit .314/.384/.485 with five home runs and 37 RBIs, demonstrating that he could still provide meaningful offensive production when given regular playing time.
That recent minor league success, combined with his major league experience and defensive versatility, could give Arroyo a chance to find another organization willing to take a chance on him.
At 31, his career is certainly at a crossroads, but the door to another MLB opportunity is not necessarily closed. With time remaining in the 2026 minor league season, Arroyo could attract interest from a club looking for experienced infield depth, particularly if injuries create a need at the major league level.
For the Mets, meanwhile, the decision represents another adjustment to their organizational depth chart as they continue evaluating players who could contribute to the major league roster. Arroyo’s departure also creates additional opportunities for younger infielders within the system to receive playing time at Syracuse.
For a player once regarded as one of baseball’s better prospects, Arroyo’s journey has taken a far more complicated path than initially expected. His latest release now leaves him with another decision to make as he looks for a new organization and another chance to prove that he still has something to offer at the highest level.
