Breaking News: Mets Strike First, Top Phillies 4-1

The New York Mets opened the second half of the 2026 Major League Baseball season with an impressive 4-1 victory over the rival Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park, as catcher Francisco Alvarez delivered a two-home run performance and starter Christian Scott turned in one of his finest outings of the season.

In the only game on the MLB schedule following the All-Star break, the Mets relied on outstanding performances from both halves of their battery. Scott controlled the game from the mound while Alvarez supplied the offensive firepower, helping New York secure an important National League East victory over one of its biggest division rivals.

The contest was played under unusual conditions after thick smoke from Canadian wildfires drifted into the Philadelphia area, forcing Major League Baseball to move the first pitch forward by an hour because of deteriorating air quality. Despite the hazy skies, the game proceeded without interruption as both teams resumed the second half of the season.

Scott (3-1) continued his emergence in the Mets’ rotation by shutting down Philadelphia’s lineup over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The young right-hander scattered just three hits, did not issue a walk and struck out seven batters while consistently keeping the Phillies off balance with excellent command and pitch selection.

Philadelphia struggled to generate sustained offense throughout the evening, managing only four hits against New York’s pitching staff. The Phillies’ lone run came in the eighth inning when shortstop Trea Turner launched a solo home run, but by then the Mets had already built a comfortable lead.

Alvarez provided the game’s biggest offensive performance, launching two solo home runs to continue his strong campaign behind the plate. His first blast came in the third inning when he connected on an Aaron Nola pitch and drove it over the center-field wall, giving New York a 1-0 advantage. The home run was Alvarez’s first since June 30 and immediately shifted momentum in favor of the visitors.

Although the Phillies had opportunities to answer, they repeatedly failed to capitalize.

J.T. Realmuto opened the bottom of the third with a single, but Philadelphia was unable to move him into scoring position. An inning later, Bryce Harper ripped a one-out double to give the home crowd hope, yet the Phillies again came away empty-handed as Scott escaped without allowing a run.

The Mets nearly broke the game open in the fifth inning after loading the bases with no outs against Aaron Nola. However, the veteran Phillies right-hander responded with one of the biggest sequences of the night, inducing a line-drive double play off the bat of A.J. Ewing before escaping the inning with minimal damage and keeping Philadelphia within striking distance.

The Phillies came heartbreakingly close to tying the game in the sixth.

Kyle Schwarber crushed a towering drive to right field that initially appeared destined to leave the ballpark. Instead, the ball struck the railing at the top of the wall and bounced back into play, turning what nearly became a game-tying home run into a long double. Brooks Raley then retired the final batter of the inning, leaving Schwarber stranded in scoring position and preserving New York’s slim lead.

The decisive moment arrived in the seventh inning.

Brett Baty greeted Nola by launching a solo home run before Alvarez stepped to the plate moments later and crushed his second homer of the night, giving the Mets back-to-back home runs and extending their advantage to 3-0.

The consecutive blasts ended Nola’s outing after 6-plus innings. Despite pitching effectively through most of the game, the veteran right-hander finished having allowed three earned runs on six hits while issuing four walks and striking out six.

New York’s bullpen ensured there would be no comeback.

Huascar Brazobán retired the Phillies in order during the seventh before Luke Weaver entered in the eighth. Although Weaver surrendered Turner’s solo home run the first home run he has allowed to a right-handed batter this season the Mets quickly regained complete control.

A.J. Ewing added valuable insurance in the ninth inning with an RBI double that pushed New York’s lead to 4-1, giving the bullpen additional breathing room.

Closer Devin Williams then slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth, recording three quick outs to earn his 14th save of the season and the 100th save of his Major League career, a significant personal milestone.

The victory gives the Mets a winning start to the second half of the season and strengthens their position in the National League playoff race, while also handing Philadelphia a disappointing defeat in front of its home fans.

For the Phillies, the loss highlighted continued offensive inconsistency despite solid efforts from Aaron Nola and late power from Turner. Meanwhile, the Mets received encouraging performances from multiple contributors, with Scott’s dominant outing, Alvarez’s two-homer explosion, Baty’s timely power and Williams’ milestone save combining to secure an important road victory over a division rival.
