What once looked like a competitive race in the NL East is beginning to tilt in favor of the Philadelphia Phillies. With the Atlanta Braves dealing with a growing list of injuries, the Mets appeared to be the Phillies’ main competition but early signs suggest that challenge may not be as strong as expected.
For New York to truly contend, its biggest stars need to perform at a high level. However, Lindor’s showing in the series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals raised concerns. His play lacked urgency and focus, contributing to key mistakes that hurt the team.
In the opening inning, Lindor mishandled a routine defensive situation. After fielding a ground ball off the bat of Alec Burleson, he casually recorded the force out at second but failed to complete what should have been an easy double play seemingly losing track of the number of outs despite it being early in the game.
Later, in a scoreless sixth inning, Lindor reached base due to an error by Nolan Gorman, only to be quickly picked off by pitcher Matthew Liberatore. Instead of attempting to recover, he appeared caught off guard and made little effort to return safely, ending the scoring opportunity.
Performances like this have only fueled optimism among Phillies fans, who see signs that the Mets may once again struggle with both execution and internal issues.
Ongoing tension surrounding Lindor
Lindor has remained a central figure in the Mets’ off-field drama dating back to their disappointing 2025 season. Reports suggested friction between him and former teammates like Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, both of whom were moved in the offseason. Additionally, his relationship with star teammate Juan Soto has reportedly been less than ideal.
Although Lindor has long been viewed as a clubhouse leader, team owner Steve Cohen recently decided the franchise would not name a captain moving forward a notable shift given past expectations that Lindor would eventually receive the title once held by David Wright.
Lindor publicly accepted the decision, stating it wouldn’t change how he approaches leadership. However, his recent on-field performance has raised questions about that role, as lapses in focus and effort contrast with the qualities typically expected from a team leader.
Bigger concerns for the Mets
There’s growing concern that the Mets may have addressed surface-level roster issues while deeper problems remain unresolved. If clubhouse tension persists, it could once again impact team chemistry and performance over the course of the season.
When those internal struggles begin to show up during games, losses can quickly follow and that’s exactly the scenario unfolding early on. If this trend continues, the Mets risk falling out of contention, leaving the Phillies with a clearer path to control the division.
At this point, Philadelphia may simply need to stay consistent while their closest rival deals with both on-field mistakes and off-field uncertainty.
