The Philadelphia Phillies have added experienced outfielder Tommy Pham to their organization, signing the veteran to a minor league contract as the club continues searching for reinforcements ahead of the MLB trade deadline. According to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, the agreement includes an opt-out clause that allows Pham to become a free agent on July 25 if he is not promoted to the major league roster.
The deal marks yet another stop in what has been a whirlwind season for the 38-year-old outfielder. Pham is now joining his third organization in less than three months after brief stints with both the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles.
Pham initially signed a minor league contract with the Mets just before Opening Day and earned a quick promotion to the big-league club in April. However, his opportunity was short-lived. He went hitless in 13 at-bats during his brief stay before being designated for assignment later that month.
Following his departure from New York, Pham joined the Orioles organization in mid-May on another minor league contract. He spent 16 games with Triple-A Norfolk but was unable to force his way onto Baltimore’s major league roster before requesting and receiving his release.
Baltimore’s crowded outfield made a promotion difficult. Even established veteran Tyler O’Neill struggled to secure consistent playing time, leaving little opportunity for another right-handed corner outfielder like Pham.
Philadelphia, however, presents a much more favorable opportunity. The Phillies have been hit hard by injuries in the outfield, with Adolis García expected to miss multiple months and Johan Rojas ruled out for the remainder of the season. Those absences have created an immediate need for experienced depth, giving Pham a legitimate chance to work his way back to the majors.
Although he is nearing the end of his career, Pham has shown in recent seasons that he can still provide offensive value. As recently as 2024, he was producing above league-average numbers while with the Chicago White Sox, posting a 104 wRC+ over 297 plate appearances before finishing the season with the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals.
Last season, Pham appeared in 120 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates, serving as a semi-regular contributor. He finished with a .700 OPS, respectable production that nevertheless failed to earn him a guaranteed major league contract during the offseason.
The Phillies have already taken steps to strengthen their outfield depth by acquiring Derek Hill from the White Sox. Hill has made an immediate impact, batting .357 while delivering two dramatic ninth-inning home runs, including a game-winning blast that quickly made him a fan favorite in Philadelphia.
Even with Hill’s strong start, the Phillies are reportedly continuing to explore the trade market for additional outfield help as they push toward the postseason.
Top prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. has received most of the recent starts in right field but has endured a difficult introduction to the major leagues, collecting just four hits in his first 30 at-bats across nine games. Brandon Marsh remains the preferred option in left field but offers valuable defensive versatility, having logged innings at all three outfield positions.
While Pham no longer possesses the speed or range to handle center field regularly, he remains a capable defender in the corner outfield spots. Last season, he recorded five Defensive Runs Saved in left field, making him a potential defensive asset for a Phillies team whose designated hitter role is firmly occupied by Kyle Schwarber.
With the trade deadline approaching and Philadelphia firmly in the playoff race, Pham now has roughly one month to prove he can still contribute at the highest level. If he performs well in the minors, the veteran could provide the Phillies with another experienced option as they attempt to strengthen their roster for a postseason push.
