PHILLIES UPDATE: Phillies Eye $38M Mets Trade

The Philadelphia Phillies could make one of the most surprising moves of the 2026 MLB trade deadline if recent predictions prove accurate, with a proposed deal sending New York Mets pitcher Clay Holmes across one of baseball’s fiercest divisional rivalries.

Although trades between National League East rivals are relatively uncommon, the highly competitive nature of the division this season has fueled speculation that teams may be more willing than usual to strike deals that strengthen their playoff chances.

Clay Holmes makes first Spring Training appearance

The Phillies remain firmly in the postseason race, trailing the division-leading Atlanta Braves by just three games. The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals are also within striking distance, making every roster move increasingly important as the second half of the season approaches. Meanwhile, the Mets have fallen well behind in the standings and could become sellers ahead of the trade deadline, creating opportunities for contenders like Philadelphia.

Holmes Emerging as Potential Phillies Target

According to a recent prediction by CBS Sports, the Phillies could target right-handed pitcher Clay Holmes, who has spent much of the season sidelined after suffering a freak leg injury.

Holmes was struck by a line drive traveling more than 110 mph during a game earlier this year, forcing him onto the injured list. Before the injury, however, the veteran right-hander was enjoying one of the strongest stretches of his career, making him an attractive option for clubs seeking bullpen reinforcements.

Despite concerns surrounding his health, many evaluators believe the injury is unlikely to have any long-term impact on his effectiveness because it affected his leg rather than his pitching arm.

Mets Could Cash In Before Free Agency

CBS Sports’ Mike Axisa suggested the Mets may decide to move Holmes before the deadline rather than risk losing him for little value after the season.

Holmes is expected to decline his $12 million player option this offseason, effectively making him a short-term rental for whichever team acquires him. Trading him now could allow New York to receive valuable prospects instead of only draft-pick compensation if he departs in free agency.

Axisa also pointed out that injured pitchers have been traded successfully in the past. One notable example came last season when Shane Bieber was dealt despite missing the entire year with an injury, showing that health concerns do not necessarily prevent deadline deals from happening.

Phillies Seeking Bullpen Upgrade

Philadelphia has been linked to several relief pitchers as the trade deadline approaches, and Holmes fits the profile of a veteran arm capable of strengthening a bullpen for a postseason run.

Before his injury, Holmes consistently generated elite velocity and induced weak contact, giving him the tools to handle high-leverage situations late in games. If he returns healthy, he could provide another dependable option alongside Philadelphia’s current relief corps.

The proposed trade would also represent one of the more unusual transactions in recent memory, given the long-standing rivalry between the Phillies and Mets. However, with New York potentially shifting toward selling and Philadelphia looking to close the gap in the NL East standings, a deal that once seemed unlikely may no longer be out of the question.

Whether the Mets are ultimately willing to send a key pitcher to a direct division rival remains uncertain, but Holmes is expected to be one of the more closely watched names as the MLB trade deadline draws near.
