The Philadelphia Phillies have engineered one of the most impressive turnarounds in baseball this season, overcoming a slow start that once left them 10 games below .500 to reestablish themselves as a serious contender. While the club’s veteran-led roster has fueled the resurgence, the front office is already looking ahead to areas that may require reinforcement before the trade deadline.
Despite their recent success, Philadelphia has not been operating at full strength. Several key players have yet to consistently perform at expected levels, yet the team has continued to win behind strong contributions from its experienced lineup and starting rotation. That resilience has positioned the Phillies to once again be active buyers as the trade market begins to take shape.
One area drawing increased attention is the bullpen. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Phillies could be an ideal landing spot for veteran left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman of the Boston Red Sox. With Philadelphia experiencing some instability among its relief arms, the hard-throwing southpaw has emerged as a logical target who could strengthen the team’s late-inning options.
The bullpen has generally been reliable this season, but recent developments have exposed potential weaknesses. The loss of Brad Keller to the injured list removed an important high-leverage option, while left-handed relievers have struggled to provide consistent production. Tanner Banks was recently demoted after an extended rough stretch, and Jose Alvarado has battled inconsistency, posting an ERA above 6.00 and making it difficult for the coaching staff to trust him in crucial situations.
Fortunately for Philadelphia, closer Jhoan Duran has been outstanding, helping stabilize the back end of the bullpen. However, relying too heavily on one dominant reliever can become risky during a postseason push, making the addition of another proven arm increasingly attractive.
That is where Chapman enters the conversation. Although he is now one of the most experienced relievers in baseball, the veteran continues to possess elite velocity and the ability to dominate hitters in high-pressure situations. His presence would immediately upgrade Philadelphia’s left-handed relief corps and provide another trusted option in late-game scenarios.
If the Phillies decide to pursue bullpen help at the trade deadline, Chapman could represent one of the most impactful additions available. Pairing the veteran left-hander with Duran would give Philadelphia a formidable one-two punch in the late innings and potentially address one of the few remaining concerns on an otherwise surging roster as the team continues its push toward October.
