JUST IN: Phillies Question Fit for Cardinals’ Nootbaar

The Philadelphia Phillies’ need for outfield help has become even more urgent following the likely season-ending injury to Adolis García, forcing the front office to aggressively explore trade options ahead of the August 3 deadline.

As president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski evaluates potential upgrades, one name that has surfaced in speculation is St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar, who currently owns a .748 OPS and remains under team control through the 2027 season. The suggestion, however, has sparked debate about whether he truly fits Philadelphia’s roster needs.

Analyst reports, including CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry, have floated Nootbaar as a possible trade candidate due to his strong start following offseason heel surgery, which previously impacted his production. Since returning, he has looked healthier and more productive, showing improved offensive consistency and solid on-base skills.

Despite that, there is growing skepticism about whether he is the right target for the Phillies. The primary concern is handedness: Nootbaar is a left-handed hitter, while Philadelphia already features several key lefty bats in Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh. With García a right-handed hitter—now sidelined, the Phillies’ lineup has become even more imbalanced, making right-handed outfield production a higher priority.

Even though Nootbaar brings respectable offensive numbers, including a career OPS near .750 and strong on-base ability, his splits against left-handed pitching are considered average at best, which raises further concerns about his fit in a lineup already struggling with right-handed depth.

Because of that, some evaluators believe Philadelphia should instead prioritize right-handed bats or more impactful offensive upgrades, even if they come at a higher acquisition cost. Names such as Taylor Ward, Jo Adell, Byron Buxton, and Mike Trout have been mentioned as more logical fits given their power profiles and handedness balance.

Ultimately, while Nootbaar is a solid and controllable player, the consensus among many analysts is that he may not be the ideal solution for a Phillies team that needs immediate right-handed impact rather than another left-handed contributor.
