The Philadelphia Phillies have surprisingly climbed in the latest MLB Power Rankings despite a mixed stretch of recent results, highlighting both their potential and the inconsistency still surrounding their season.
After a difficult start to the year that saw them stumble to a 9–19 record, Philadelphia has gradually steadied itself and worked its way back into the playoff conversation. However, their recent form has not been flawless. The Phillies currently sit just below .500 at 26–27, and last week reflected that inconsistency, as they went 2–4 while still managing to inch upward in league-wide evaluations.
Despite the losing record over that span, MLB analyst Will Leitch still moved Philadelphia up one spot from 11th to 10th placing them back inside the top tier of teams. The decision underscores how closely the Phillies are being watched as they begin to resemble the contender many expected at the start of the season, even if the results haven’t fully stabilized.
One of the biggest reasons for optimism remains the pitching staff. The duo of Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez continues to dominate opposing lineups and is increasingly viewed as one of the strongest one-two punches in baseball, with both pitchers drawing early attention in the National League Cy Young race. Their performances have kept Philadelphia competitive even during uneven stretches.
However, concerns persist beyond the top of the rotation. Aaron Nola has struggled with consistency, and his recent outings have raised questions about stability in the middle of the staff. That uncertainty adds pressure to an otherwise strong pitching unit.
Offensively, the Phillies also experienced a notable dip during the week. After showing signs of improvement in recent games, the lineup cooled off significantly, particularly in a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians where they managed just four total runs and were shut out in the opener. The struggles were especially pronounced among right-handed hitters, an ongoing issue that continues to limit the team’s offensive ceiling.
Even with those concerns, Philadelphia’s underlying talent and pitching strength appear to be keeping them afloat in national evaluations. Still, the inconsistency remains a storyline as the team tries to fully re-establish itself as a legitimate contender.
Looking ahead, the Phillies face a major early-season test with a challenging West Coast trip against the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. That stretch is expected to serve as a measuring stick for where the team truly stands, as they attempt to prove that their recent ranking improvement reflects sustainable progress rather than temporary perception.
