The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be sticking with Alec Bohm despite growing questions surrounding the veteran third baseman’s performance and future with the club.
Bohm was noticeably absent from Philadelphia’s starting lineup Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, a decision that immediately attracted attention given the difficult stretch he has experienced. The decision came one day after Bohm went 0-for-4 with a walk, ending another frustrating offensive performance with a visibly disappointed walk back to the dugout.
With the Phillies pushing through the second half of the season and trying to build the strongest possible lineup for the stretch run, Bohm’s situation has become increasingly significant. His inconsistent production has created questions about whether he can continue to be an everyday contributor, particularly with his contract situation adding another layer of uncertainty.
Still, Philadelphia manager Don Mattingly made it clear that the organization has not lost confidence in Bohm.
“I trust Alec,” Mattingly said, reinforcing the Phillies’ belief that the third baseman remains an important part of their plans.
Bohm’s season has been anything but straightforward. At times, he has provided timely hits and delivered important run-producing performances. At other points, however, his offensive struggles have become difficult to overlook, especially when the Phillies need consistency from the middle of their lineup.
Mattingly acknowledged that Bohm has experienced both strong and disappointing stretches throughout the season. However, the manager emphasized that Bohm has also shown an ability to come through when the Phillies need him most.
“There’s been some ups and downs,” Mattingly explained. “There’s been some good sections and some sections that haven’t looked as good, but for the most part, he’s been a guy that’s driven in some big runs for us.”
Saturday’s lineup also demonstrated the amount of flexibility Philadelphia has at its disposal. With Bohm sitting, Kyle Schwarber moved to first base, Bryce Harper served as the designated hitter, and Bryan De La Cruz started in right field.
That arrangement gives the Phillies several ways to manage their personnel while also allowing Bohm an opportunity to step away from the spotlight for a day.
Mattingly was careful not to describe the decision as a “reset,” suggesting that the Phillies did not view Bohm’s absence as a major disciplinary or performance-related move.
Instead, the manager characterized it as a normal day off that happened to arrive at an appropriate time.
“Reset is not a great word, I don’t think, for this situation,” Mattingly said. “I think it’s more this was a normal day that we were going to do.”
At the same time, Mattingly acknowledged that the break could benefit Bohm physically and mentally. The grind of a long MLB season can take its toll, and with increased scrutiny from fans and the media, a brief opportunity to step away could be valuable.
“I do think the day’s not bad for him from the standpoint of bodywise, and just a day off in this stretch,” Mattingly added.
That distinction is important for Philadelphia. The Phillies are not publicly signaling that they have given up on Bohm. Instead, they appear to be challenging him to rediscover the consistency that made him such an important part of the club.
The pressure is particularly noticeable because Bohm is playing in a contract year. Every slump, lineup absence and difficult at-bat naturally invites questions about his long-term future, while every clutch hit strengthens the argument that he remains worth keeping around.
For now, the Phillies’ position appears clear: they still believe in Alec Bohm.
But belief alone will not eliminate the concerns surrounding his performance. As Philadelphia continues navigating the most important portion of the season, Bohm will have another opportunity to demonstrate that he can regain his rhythm, produce consistently and remain a dependable piece of a team with postseason ambitions.
The next stretch of games could therefore become especially important for Bohm not only because of what he can contribute to the Phillies’ playoff push, but also because his performance could influence how the organization views his future beyond this season.
For a player facing mounting scrutiny, the message from Philadelphia is supportive but the expectation remains unmistakable: Bohm needs to turn that trust into production.
