The Philadelphia Phillies pulled off one of their most dramatic victories of the season Tuesday night, erupting for eight runs in a stunning ninth-inning rally to overcome the Washington Nationals 14-9 in a wild back-and-forth contest.
Entering the final inning trailing 8-6 and facing just one out away from defeat, the Phillies looked destined for a heartbreaking loss. Instead, they unleashed an offensive explosion that completely flipped the game and showcased the resilience of a club determined to remain among the National League’s elite contenders.
The comeback began with two outs when Trea Turner singled to keep Philadelphia alive. Moments later, Brandon Marsh delivered the first crushing blow, launching a game-tying two-run homer off Nationals reliever Brad Lord. The momentum instantly shifted in the Phillies’ favor as Bryce Harper followed with a single before pinch-hitter Derek Hill reached safely, setting the stage for the game’s biggest moment.
With the Nationals suddenly reeling, Bryson Stott stepped to the plate and crushed a towering 403-foot three-run homer to right field, turning a two-run deficit into an 11-8 Phillies lead. The blast silenced the Washington crowd and capped one of the most dramatic swings of the season.
Philadelphia wasn’t finished. Edmundo Sosa continued the assault with a two-run double, and Turner added an RBI single as the Phillies piled on eight runs in the inning, transforming what appeared to be a loss into a commanding lead in a matter of minutes.
The offensive outburst overshadowed an already chaotic game that featured multiple lead changes. Earlier, J.T. Realmuto had given Philadelphia a 6-5 advantage with a three-run double in the eighth inning. However, Washington responded immediately when Jorbit Vivas launched a three-run homer in the bottom half, putting the Nationals back in front 8-6 and seemingly positioning them for victory.
Instead, the Phillies authored one of their most memorable comebacks of 2026.
Several players delivered standout performances during the offensive barrage. Stott finished with three hits, four runs scored, and the decisive three-run homer. Marsh was a triple shy of the cycle while providing the game-tying blast. Sosa, filling in for MLB home-run leader Kyle Schwarber, produced a huge night by homering and driving in five runs.
Philadelphia also received a strong effort from starter Jesús Luzardo, who battled through 6.2 innings while striking out 13 hitters, matching a career high despite allowing five runs. Reliever Orion Kerkering earned the victory, improving to 4-0 on the season.
The win was even more impressive considering the Phillies were without Schwarber, who was scratched before the game because of lower-back tightness. Washington was also missing shortstop CJ Abrams, who was removed from the lineup due to left-side tightness.
For the Nationals, Luis Garcia Jr. added a home run in the ninth inning, while Dylan Crews contributed two hits, a walk, and three runs scored. However, those efforts were ultimately overshadowed by Philadelphia’s relentless late-game surge.
What will be remembered most from the night is the Phillies’ extraordinary ninth-inning eruption. Down by two runs, down to their final out, and seemingly on the verge of defeat, Philadelphia responded with eight unanswered runs to complete one of the most remarkable comebacks of the season and leave Washington stunned.
