The Texas Rangers continue trimming their roster ahead of Opening Day, making some decisions easier than others.
On Saturday, the team officially released veteran pitcher Ryan Brasier after it became evident the non-roster invitee was unlikely to earn a spot. The Wichita Falls native, who previously pitched for the Chicago Cubs, had the option to request his release before the season began and will now look for opportunities elsewhere.

Brasier appeared in eight spring training games for Texas, posting a 7.36 ERA over 7.1 innings. While he didn’t issue any walks and recorded two strikeouts, he allowed 12 hits and seven runs (six earned), which ultimately hurt his chances.
Bullpen competition becoming clearer
Because Brasier was not on the 40-man roster, the Rangers would have needed to create space for him—something that became even less likely after strong performances from other pitchers. Peyton Gray, for example, stood out among non-roster relievers with a team-leading 17 strikeouts before being optioned to the minors, further highlighting the gap in performance.
A few non-roster pitchers remain in contention for bullpen roles. Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber could factor in as long relievers, a role manager Skip Schumaker has emphasized early in the season due to expected pitch limits on starters.
Right-hander Josh Sborz is another name to watch after an encouraging spring following shoulder surgery, though the team may prefer he continue building strength in the minors.
Limited spots, tough decisions
Despite a few open competitions, much of the Rangers’ pitching staff appears settled. Robert Garcia and Chris Martin are projected to share closing duties. If Jacob Latz doesn’t crack the starting rotation, he’s likely to fill a left-handed long relief role, while Cole Winn could handle similar duties from the right side.
With only a handful of bullpen spots remaining, the Rangers are considering options like Tyler Alexander and Jalen Beeks, while Jakob Junis, Luis Curvelo, and Rule 5 pick Carter Baumler are competing for the final positions. Baumler, in particular, must make the roster or be returned to his original team.
The Rangers wrapped up camp in Arizona and will play a pair of exhibition games against Kansas City before heading to Philadelphia for their Opening Day matchup against the Phillies.
