The New York Rangers are being urged to maintain Alexis Lafrenière’s current prominent role, as any step back in responsibility could hinder his progress. After years of uneven usage, the young forward is finally being trusted in a top-line capacity, and that shift has significantly improved his impact on the ice.

Although Lafrenière was selected first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, his development path in New

 York was initially inconsistent. Rather than being immediately placed in a leading offensive role, he spent much of his early career on lower lines and received limited opportunities on the top power-play unit. Even after breaking into the lineup more regularly, he was still largely confined to secondary roles for several seasons.

It wasn’t until his fifth year with the team that he was finally given consistent top-line minutes and a primary power-play role. Since then, particularly following roster changes that opened up space in the lineup, Lafrenière has begun to show the form expected of a first-overall pick, displaying more confidence and production.

With that breakthrough finally occurring, there is growing sentiment that the Rangers should avoid reverting his usage and instead continue building around his current elevated role.
