Kentucky basketball has emerged as one of the finalists for one of the nation’s most highly regarded prospects in the 2027 recruiting class, as five-star point guard Reese Alston has trimmed his list of potential destinations to seven schools.
Alston announced that Kentucky made his latest cut alongside Houston, Tennessee, LSU, Vanderbilt, Louisville and Wichita State. The decision gives the Wildcats another opportunity to pursue a player who is already regarded as one of the premier prospects in his class.
The development is particularly significant for Kentucky head coach Mark Pope and his recruiting staff, who continue to pursue elite high school talent while building the foundation for future Wildcats teams.
Alston is one of 2027’s elite prospects
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Alston plays for Second Baptist School in Houston, Texas, and has quickly established himself as one of the most coveted guards in the country.
He is currently ranked among the top 10 players nationally in the 2027 class. The 247Sports Composite has him ranked No. 9 overall in the country, No. 3 among point guards and No. 1 overall prospect in Texas.
Those rankings illustrate why so many major programs are competing for his commitment.
As a lead guard, Alston has attracted attention for his ability to control the tempo, create opportunities for teammates and attack the basket. His combination of ball-handling ability, scoring potential and court vision has made him an especially valuable target for programs searching for a future starting point guard.
His recruitment could become one of the biggest storylines of the 2027 cycle as more programs attempt to establish themselves as the favorite.
Kentucky has already invested heavily in his recruitment
The Wildcats are not newcomers to Alston’s recruitment.
Kentucky assistant coach Mikhail McLean has played an important role in maintaining the program’s relationship with the highly rated guard. McLean visited Alston in April 2025, giving Kentucky an early opportunity to establish a connection.
Alston later made an unofficial visit to Lexington on Oct. 11, 2025. Two days after that visit, Kentucky officially extended him an offer.
That early involvement appears to have helped the Wildcats remain in contention as Alston gradually narrowed his recruitment.
While Kentucky has not emerged as the clear favorite at this stage, reaching the top seven gives Pope and his staff additional time to strengthen their relationship with the talented guard.
Could this become Kentucky vs. Louisville?
One of the most intriguing elements of Alston’s recruitment is the presence of both Kentucky and Louisville on his list.
The rivalry between the Wildcats and Cardinals adds another layer to an already competitive recruitment. Reports have suggested that Louisville has established some early momentum with Alston, putting the Cardinals in a potentially strong position.
However, the recruitment remains far from over.
With Alston still having significant time before making his college decision, Kentucky has plenty of opportunities to change the direction of the race. Continued communication, additional visits and the Wildcats’ plans for their future roster could all influence his eventual choice.
For Kentucky fans, the fact that Louisville is viewed as an early contender only makes Alston’s inclusion of the Wildcats more intriguing.
Family basketball history adds another storyline
Alston also comes from a basketball family with an established connection to the highest levels of the sport.
His father, Rafer Alston, was a legendary streetball player who later turned his talents into a successful college and NBA career.
Rafer played college basketball at Fresno State before spending 12 seasons in the NBA. During his professional career, he played for six different teams and became particularly well known for his creativity, ball-handling skills and ability to operate as a point guard.
The younger Alston has developed his own identity as a prospect, but his family background gives his recruitment another interesting dimension.
Kentucky’s 2027 class is already taking shape
Alston’s inclusion on Kentucky’s list comes as Pope and his staff continue to work on assembling a strong 2027 recruiting class.
The Wildcats have already secured a commitment from five-star small forward Ryan Hampton, giving Kentucky an elite piece around which the rest of the class can potentially be built.
Adding a top-10 national prospect such as Alston would significantly strengthen that group.
A potential Hampton-Alston pairing would give Kentucky two highly rated pieces at important positions and could give the Wildcats one of the most talented recruiting classes in the country if they are able to add more elite prospects.
Plenty of time remains in the recruitment
Although Louisville may currently have some momentum, it would be premature to declare a favorite.
Alston is still heading toward his senior season, meaning there is considerable time for Kentucky, Houston, Tennessee, LSU, Vanderbilt and Wichita State to make their respective cases.
Recruitments involving prospects of Alston’s caliber can change quickly. A strong season, an impressive official visit or a change in coaching or roster circumstances can dramatically alter a player’s priorities.
Kentucky will therefore have to remain aggressive if it wants to turn its current position into a commitment.
For Pope, keeping the Wildcats involved with a player ranked inside the national top 10 is already a positive development. The program’s ability to remain competitive for elite recruits is an important part of Kentucky’s effort to return to sustained national prominence.
A recruitment worth watching
Alston’s decision to include Kentucky in his top seven ensures that the Wildcats will remain a major part of one of the most interesting recruiting battles in the 2027 class.
