News Report: Senators Steal Top Rangers Target

The New York Rangers have watched another potential trade target come off the board, as rising forward William Eklund was acquired by the Ottawa Senators in a move that further complicates New York’s offseason plans.

For months, Eklund had been viewed by many around the league as a possible fit for the Rangers. The talented young winger offered exactly the type of player New York needs: a productive top-six forward, still in his early twenties, with room for further growth and a contract that would not cripple the team’s salary-cap flexibility. However, those hopes officially ended when Ottawa acted decisively and secured the former San Jose Sharks standout.

The acquisition is being praised as a masterstroke by Senators general manager Steve Staios, who quickly turned newly acquired draft assets into an NHL-ready contributor. After losing franchise captain Brady Tkachuk, Ottawa faced pressure to remain competitive and avoid taking a step backward. Rather than relying on future draft selections, the organization chose to add an established young player capable of helping immediately.

Eklund appears to fit that vision perfectly.

The Swedish winger will not turn 24 until October and has already demonstrated consistent offensive production at the NHL level. Last season, he recorded 15 goals and 38 assists for 53 points in 78 games. The year before, he produced 58 points in 77 contests, proving he can contribute regularly despite playing on a rebuilding Sharks team.

Many evaluators believe Eklund’s ceiling remains even higher. His playmaking ability, skating, and hockey IQ have made him one of the league’s more intriguing young forwards. Some analysts argue that he simply needs to become more aggressive as a shooter to unlock another level offensively. If that happens, Ottawa could end up with one of the best value acquisitions of the offseason.

The move becomes even more intriguing considering the supporting cast Eklund will join. Playing alongside elite playmakers such as Tim Stützle could provide additional opportunities for offensive growth and allow him to flourish in a larger role than he had in San Jose.

For the Rangers, however, the deal represents another missed opportunity.

Within a matter of days, New York has watched several notable players—including Tkachuk, Eklund, and Jordan Kyrou—find new homes elsewhere. As the trade market continues to move rapidly ahead of the NHL Draft, the list of available impact forwards continues to shrink.

That reality places increasing pressure on Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury. New York remains in search of offensive upgrades but faces a relatively weak free-agent market and fewer attractive trade candidates with each passing day.

One potential avenue remains the possibility of moving veteran center Vincent Trocheck in exchange for assets that could be used to reshape the roster. Trade speculation surrounding Trocheck has persisted, but no significant progress has been reported, leaving the Rangers in a holding pattern while rival clubs continue making impactful additions.

As Ottawa strengthens its lineup and other contenders become more aggressive, the Rangers find themselves under growing pressure to act. Missing out on Eklund not only eliminates a promising solution for New York’s top six but also serves as another reminder that the market is moving quickly—and standing still may no longer be an option.
