JUST IN: Springfield Cardinals Name Set to Change After 22 Years

The Springfield Cardinals are preparing to close one of the most recognizable chapters in their franchise history. The Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals has announced that it will no longer use the Springfield Cardinals name beginning with the 2027 Minor League Baseball season.

After the conclusion of the 2026 campaign, the organization will undergo a complete rebrand that will introduce a new team name, logos, visual identity and uniforms. Despite the changes, the franchise will remain in Springfield, Missouri, continue playing at Route 66 Stadium and maintain its affiliation with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The organization plans to officially reveal its new identity during a free launch event at Route 66 Stadium on Tuesday, October 6. More information about the event and the new branding is expected to be released as the unveiling approaches.

For the franchise, the decision represents the beginning of a new era rather than an end to professional baseball in Springfield. General Manager Dan Reiter emphasized that the organization wants the new identity to better represent Southwest Missouri while continuing the traditions and community connections established over more than two decades.

Professional baseball has a long history in the Ozarks, dating back to 1905. The Springfield Cardinals era began in 2005, meaning the current identity will have represented the team for 22 seasons by the time the 2026 campaign concludes.

During that period, more than seven million fans have attended games, making the Springfield Cardinals name a familiar part of the region’s sports culture. The organization is therefore planning a series of events and promotions to recognize the memories created under the current identity before the rebrand takes effect.

The team will continue playing as the Springfield Cardinals throughout its remaining 2026 regular-season home games and potentially through the Texas League playoffs. The final 12 regular-season home games will be particularly significant, with the organization planning special programming, commemorative merchandise and opportunities for fans to celebrate the team’s history.

One of those tributes will be a permanent signing wall at Route 66 Stadium. RED Access Members will have the first opportunity to add their names beginning Tuesday, August 25, while all other fans will be invited to participate starting Thursday, August 27.

The organization has also scheduled several commemorative giveaways during the final homestands. Fans will have opportunities to receive special items marking the 2005-2026 Springfield Cardinals era, including a commemorative red cap, coin, customizable jersey and ticket.

The giveaways are scheduled for August 29, September 11, September 12 and September 13. The team also plans to use specially stamped baseballs during its final three regular-season home games, with some game-used and new commemorative balls available for fans to purchase.

The farewell celebrations are intended to give supporters an opportunity to say goodbye to the Springfield Cardinals name while recognizing the players, staff and fans who helped build the franchise’s identity.

However, the announcement has generated a mixed reaction among longtime supporters. Some fans expressed disappointment and frustration after learning that the team they had supported for years would soon have a different name.

For some supporters, the change is more than simply replacing a logo or uniform. They have developed strong emotional connections to the Springfield Cardinals brand, particularly because the team has been part of the community for more than two decades.

Several fans who spoke about the announcement described the news as difficult to accept. Some even said they were considering returning merchandise or reconsidering their plans to purchase season tickets for the 2027 season.

One longtime fan said the announcement felt like a major emotional blow after years of supporting the organization. Another expressed frustration over investing in merchandise and tickets for a team that will technically have a different identity next year.

The reaction highlights the challenge facing the organization as it attempts to create excitement around the new brand while saying goodbye to a name that has become deeply familiar to local fans.

Reiter acknowledged that supporters have every right to be disappointed. He also revealed that the rebranding process has been underway for nearly two years and that the announcement had been included on the team’s promotional calendar since March.

According to the general manager, the organization did not make the decision suddenly. Instead, the franchise has spent considerable time developing what it believes will be a more distinctive identity for Springfield and the surrounding Southwest Missouri community.

The team also wants supporters to understand that the rebrand does not mean the end of its relationship with St. Louis. Springfield will remain a Double-A affiliate of the Cardinals, meaning fans will continue to watch prospects in the St. Louis organization develop at Route 66 Stadium.

The first game under the new identity is scheduled for Friday, April 2, 2027, when the team hosts the Tulsa Drillers.

That game will officially begin a new chapter for the franchise, but the organization hopes the history of the Springfield Cardinals will remain an important part of its story.

As the 2026 season winds down, the focus will shift toward celebrating the current identity. The final homestand against the Arkansas Travelers from September 8 through September 13 will provide one of the biggest opportunities for fans to participate in the farewell celebrations.

Before then, the team will host the San Antonio Missions from August 25 through August 30, beginning a stretch of games in which the organization will increasingly highlight its 22-year history.

For Reiter and the Cardinals organization, the goal is to balance nostalgia with anticipation. While the Springfield Cardinals name is coming to an end, the franchise itself is staying in the community.

The organization is now asking fans to remain patient until the new identity is revealed and to give the new name, logo and uniforms an opportunity to win them over.

The coming months will determine whether the new brand can create the same emotional connection that the Springfield Cardinals name built over 22 years. For now, however, the franchise is preparing for a farewell to one of the most recognizable identities in Springfield sports and looking ahead to an entirely new era beginning in 2027.
