The Philadelphia Phillies responded to recent struggles with an emphatic offensive performance Saturday night, overwhelming the Minnesota Twins 9-1 at Target Field behind a huge fifth inning, a career-best performance from Alec Bohm and a three-run home run from Bryson Stott.
Stott provided the exclamation point during Philadelphia’s seven-run fifth inning, launching a three-run homer that barely stayed fair and struck the right-field foul pole. The blast turned an already productive inning into a decisive offensive explosion and helped the Phillies cruise to their second victory in as many games.
Bohm was arguably the biggest offensive standout of the night, recording a career-high five hits and repeatedly keeping rallies alive. Bryce Harper also contributed two hits and scored a run, while Edmundo Sosa and J.T. Realmuto each drove in two runs as Philadelphia’s lineup consistently put pressure on Minnesota pitching.
The victory was especially important for the Phillies after they had dropped two straight games. Philadelphia had already opened the three-game series with a 7-1 victory Thursday night in the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, and Saturday’s win gave the club another convincing result against Minnesota.
Luzardo Delivers Another Strong Start
While the Phillies’ offense generated most of the headlines, starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo played an important role in making the big lead stand.
The left-hander improved to 11-5 after working 6⅔ innings. Luzardo surrendered one run on seven hits while striking out nine and issuing only two walks.
Minnesota managed to put runners on base throughout the night, but Luzardo repeatedly prevented the Twins from turning those opportunities into significant rallies. His ability to miss bats helped Philadelphia maintain control while its offense continued to build an insurmountable advantage.
By the time Luzardo departed in the seventh inning, the Phillies had already established a comfortable lead.
Phillies Strike First
Philadelphia wasted an opportunity to create a much larger advantage early in the game but still managed to get on the scoreboard.
The Phillies loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning, putting immediate pressure on Minnesota rookie starter Connor Prielipp. However, the Twins managed to limit the damage to one run.
Realmuto provided the breakthrough with a sacrifice fly, giving Philadelphia an early 1-0 advantage.
Although the Phillies could have scored more in the inning, their inability to capitalize fully did not ultimately matter. Their offense would explode later in the game.
Seven-Run Fifth Inning Changes Everything
The game completely changed in the fifth.
Realmuto opened the inning with a single, giving Philadelphia an early baserunner. Prielipp then retired the next two batters and appeared to be close to escaping the inning without allowing additional damage.
Instead, everything unraveled.
The Minnesota left-hander walked three consecutive batters, bringing home another Philadelphia run and extending the Phillies’ lead to 2-0.
Bohm then stepped to the plate and delivered a hard single through the middle, bringing another run home.
Sosa followed with a sharply hit ball through the left side, driving in two more runs and suddenly pushing Philadelphia ahead 5-0.
That set the stage for Stott.
The Phillies third baseman connected on Prielipp’s pitch and sent it toward right field. The ball stayed fair long enough to strike the foul pole, producing a three-run home run and giving Philadelphia an 8-0 lead.
The homer capped a seven-run rally with two outs and effectively put the game out of reach.
It was exactly the type of offensive eruption the Phillies needed after struggling to consistently generate runs in recent games.
Bohm Leads the Offensive Attack
Stott’s home run may have provided the most memorable moment, but Bohm’s performance was arguably the most consistent offensive contribution of the night.
The third baseman finished with five hits, establishing a career high and repeatedly finding ways to reach base and extend Philadelphia’s innings.
His big fifth-inning single was particularly important because it came immediately after Minnesota had surrendered another run through walks. Instead of allowing the Twins to regain control, Bohm kept the rally moving.
Harper also continued to make an impact, collecting two hits and scoring once.
Sosa and Realmuto provided additional production, with both players driving in multiple runs.
Realmuto finished the night with two sacrifice flies, including another in the ninth inning that completed Philadelphia’s scoring.
Twins Finally Break Through
Minnesota avoided being shut out, but the damage had already been done.
In the sixth inning, Royce Lewis doubled off the top of the left-field wall, bringing home Ryan Jeffers and cutting Philadelphia’s lead to 8-1.
That would be as close as Minnesota got.
The Twins managed only sporadic offensive threats after that, while Philadelphia’s pitching staff protected its massive advantage.
Realmuto added another sacrifice fly in the ninth, making it 9-1 and putting the finishing touch on the Phillies’ dominant victory.
Twins Continue Difficult August
The loss extended a difficult stretch for Minnesota.
The Twins have struggled significantly during August and fell to 4-9 for the month following Saturday’s defeat.
Prielipp endured his toughest outing of the season, allowing a season-high eight runs and eight hits over five innings. He did manage to strike out six batters, but four walks contributed to the problems that eventually led to Philadelphia’s huge fifth-inning rally.
The Twins were able to get two hits apiece from Luke Keaschall and Kaelen Culpepper, with Keaschall doing so on his 24th birthday, but the offense never produced enough to seriously challenge Philadelphia.
Concern for Trea Turner
The Phillies did have one potentially concerning moment late in the game.
Shortstop Trea Turner limped off the field during the eighth inning after fouling a pitch off his right knee.
Turner immediately appeared uncomfortable, creating some concern for Philadelphia despite the comfortable score.
The Phillies will likely monitor him closely following the game to determine whether the incident results in any missed time. Given Turner’s importance to Philadelphia’s lineup and postseason ambitions, his health will be something to watch closely.
Phillies Regain Momentum
Saturday’s victory represented a strong response from Philadelphia.
The Phillies combined efficient pitching with an explosive offensive inning to overwhelm the Twins. Luzardo gave them nearly seven innings of quality work, while the lineup produced nine runs on a night highlighted by Bohm’s five-hit performance and Stott’s three-run blast.
The victory also gave Philadelphia another important win as the club continues navigating the final stretch of the regular season.
For Stott, the night will be remembered for the swing that capped the seven-run fifth inning.
For Bohm, it was a career-best five-hit performance.
For Luzardo, it was another strong start and his 11th victory.
And for the Phillies as a whole, it was an emphatic reminder of how dangerous their lineup can be when everything comes together.
Philadelphia now has another opportunity to complete a series victory over Minnesota and build additional momentum heading into the increasingly important weeks ahead.
