Veteran left-handed pitcher Nestor Cortes has encountered an unexpected setback shortly after signing with the Philadelphia Phillies, as the organization placed him on the seven-day injured list before he could make his debut in the minor leagues.
Cortes recently joined the Phillies on a contract that was designed to give the organization another experienced pitching option as the regular season enters its crucial stretch. Philadelphia reportedly viewed the veteran southpaw as a potential depth piece who could work his way back into form in the minors before possibly receiving an opportunity with the major league club.
The Phillies initially assigned Cortes to Low-A following the signing, giving him an opportunity to pitch in a controlled environment and rebuild his workload. However, that process has now been interrupted by an undisclosed injury.
According to MLB.com, Cortes was officially placed on the seven-day injured list, with the transaction retroactive to Tuesday. The club has not publicly revealed the specific nature or severity of the injury, meaning there is currently no clear timetable for his return to the mound.
The timing is particularly unfortunate for Cortes because he had just begun a new chapter with the Phillies. Rather than immediately joining Philadelphia’s major league rotation, the veteran was expected to use his minor league assignment as a chance to demonstrate that he could still be an effective pitcher after a difficult 2025 campaign.
Cortes has plenty of major league experience and has spent time with several organizations throughout his career. He made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2018 before later pitching for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres.
His most impressive season came in 2022, when he established himself as one of the better left-handed starters in baseball. While pitching for the Yankees, Cortes earned his first All-Star selection and posted a 2.44 ERA over 28 starts. His performance that season also earned him an eighth-place finish in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
That version of Cortes has been difficult to find in recent seasons, however. His 2025 campaign was particularly challenging as he divided his time between the Brewers and Padres. Across eight starts, he struggled to a 6.29 ERA and was unable to consistently reproduce the effectiveness that had made him such a valuable starter earlier in his career.
Cortes has not appeared in a major league game during the 2026 season, making his Phillies opportunity somewhat of a reclamation project. Philadelphia appeared willing to take a chance on his previous track record, hoping that the experienced lefty could rediscover some of his old form and become a useful depth option.
The Phillies’ decision to sign him also reflected the importance of having additional pitching depth during the final portion of the season. As teams approach the postseason, injuries and workload concerns can quickly create holes in a pitching staff, making experienced arms such as Cortes potentially valuable even if they are not immediately expected to occupy a regular rotation spot.
Before Cortes can even begin that process, though, he will have to recover from his current injury. The seven-day injured list does not necessarily indicate a long-term absence, but the lack of information regarding the injury makes it difficult to determine when he will be able to resume throwing and begin building toward a minor league appearance.
For Philadelphia, the hope will be that the setback is relatively minor and that Cortes can return to action soon. If he is able to get healthy and regain his rhythm, he could still provide the organization with an experienced left-handed option later in the season.
For Cortes, the immediate priority is simply getting back on the mound. His previous All-Star season demonstrates that he has the ability to be an effective major league starter, but his recent struggles mean he will need time to prove that he can once again perform at that level.
Until more information becomes available, questions will remain about whether Cortes can pitch his way into Philadelphia’s plans this season. The Phillies will continue monitoring his condition while he works through the injury and waits for his opportunity to make his organizational debut.
The development comes as Philadelphia continues its postseason push. The Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-0 on Wednesday, but the club’s broader focus remains on maintaining enough depth across its pitching staff for the demanding weeks ahead.
Cortes’ arrival was supposed to give Philadelphia another potential weapon for that stretch run. Instead, his first challenge with the organization will be overcoming an injury before he can even throw his first competitive pitch in a Phillies uniform.
