The 2026 MLB season kicked off in spectacular fashion, as three newcomers wasted no time announcing their arrival on Opening Day.
Outfielder Carson Benge of the New York Mets, first baseman Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox, and shortstop JJ Wetherholt of the St. Louis Cardinals each hit a home run in their Major League debuts. According to OptaSTATS, this marks the first time in MLB history that three players have all homered in their respective debut games.
While Opening Day often features top prospects making their first appearances, it is still a rare achievement for multiple players to debut simultaneously and all deliver home runs. The uniqueness of this moment highlights just how remarkable the feat is.
Although Murakami is not a traditional rookie having spent eight seasons in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball before joining the White Sox he still made an immediate impression, even in a heavy loss.
Benge, meanwhile, secured a starting role in right field after a strong spring training and carried that momentum into the season opener. In the Mets’ win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, he contributed with a home run, along with reaching base multiple times and scoring twice.
Similarly, Wetherholt played a key role for the Cardinals, who are currently rebuilding but see him as a cornerstone for the future. His Opening Day performance including a home run and a sacrifice fly helped power his team to victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
With such an impressive start, all three players will be closely watched as the season unfolds, having already made a lasting impression on day one.
