News Update: Tigers Roar to NCAA Championship Behind Stout’s Breakthrough Win

The Auburn Tigers delivered a commanding performance to secure the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship, defeating the UCLA Bruins at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, California, and reinforcing their status as one of collegiate golf’s premier programs.

The championship match showcased Auburn’s depth and consistency, as the top-ranked Tigers controlled the competition against a surging UCLA side that had entered the tournament in strong form. Auburn ultimately secured a decisive 4–1 victory, ending the Bruins’ momentum and sealing another national title for the program.

A key storyline throughout the championship was the presence of PGA Tour-linked talent within Auburn’s lineup, including standout Jackson Koivun. Koivun delivered a composed and competitive performance, notably going head-to-head with Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout, who would go on to claim the individual national championship. Koivun held a narrow lead heading into the final hole of their matchup before Auburn clinched enough team victories to close out the championship before his match concluded.

Koivun also impressed in the semifinal round against UCLA’s Baylor Larrabee, where he showcased dominance after an early back-and-forth start. After being tied through five holes, Koivun pulled away to secure a 4-and-3 win on the 15th hole, helping Auburn advance confidently into the final.

Across the board, Auburn’s strength was evident, as every player in their lineup entered their respective matches ranked higher than their UCLA opponents. Despite that statistical advantage, the Bruins remained competitive, but they were ultimately overpowered by Auburn’s depth, discipline, and execution under pressure.

Auburn head coach Nick Clinard expressed deep emotion following the victory, emphasizing the significance of the achievement for both the team and the program.

“It brings tears to my eyes,” Clinard said. “I love them so much, and I love Auburn and our program. I’m just very grateful.”

While Auburn celebrated the team championship, the individual title was claimed by Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout after a dramatic final-round battle. Stout fended off a strong challenge from Alabama’s William Jennings, who briefly surged into contention during the closing stretch.

Stout opened with a strong front nine, shooting a 32 and building a comfortable lead at 16-under par. However, the pressure intensified late after a series of bogeys over a five-hole stretch narrowed the margin significantly. Despite the stumble, he delivered when it mattered most, sinking a crucial birdie on the par-5 18th hole to finish at 14-under and secure a one-shot victory.

Reflecting on his performance, Stout described the experience as both challenging and rewarding.

“This is what we practice so hard for,” Stout said in a post-round interview. “I wish I wouldn’t have made it so stressful coming down the stretch, but that’s why we go to Oklahoma State—for moments like that.”

Jennings, who mounted a late charge with a series of birdies early in his round, ultimately fell just short after a bogey on his final hole. Despite the disappointment, he expressed pride in his overall performance and the discipline he showed throughout the tournament.

With Stout currently ranked among the top amateur golfers in the world and expected to transition into the PGA Tour University pathway in the coming year, his victory further strengthens his rising profile in the sport.
