MAJOR SHOCKING NEWS: Will Tahaad Pettiford Leave? Auburn Braces After NIT Victory

Concerns are beginning to mount around Tahaad Pettiford’s future at Auburn following the Tigers’ NIT championship victory, as uncertainty looms over whether he will remain with the program. After an inconsistent and somewhat disappointing 2025–26 season, many within Alabama and the broader Auburn community are questioning if Pettiford will continue with the team or seek opportunities elsewhere. Throughout the season, his on-court production failed to fully match expectations tied to his role, fueling ongoing speculation that he could eventually enter the transfer portal.

In the aftermath of Auburn’s NIT title win, AL.com’s Jerry Humphrey pointed out that one of the most pressing issues facing head coach Steven Pearl and newly appointed general manager Brian Kloman is determining Pettiford’s place within the team’s future. The uncertainty surrounding the point guard has become one of the program’s central storylines. Humphrey described it as the “million-dollar question,” emphasizing how pivotal Pettiford’s decision could be for Auburn moving forward.

After testing the NBA Draft waters following his freshman campaign, Pettiford chose to return to Auburn with hopes of boosting his professional prospects and helping lead the Tigers on a deep NCAA Tournament run. However, those ambitions fell short. The team struggled throughout the season, accumulating 16 losses and failing to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Instead, Auburn had to settle for the NIT, where they ultimately claimed the championship with a 92–86 win over Tulsa—an achievement, but not the one the program initially envisioned.

With the transfer portal window opening from April 7 through April 21, Pettiford faces a significant decision. Should he choose to enter the portal, he would still have two years of eligibility remaining, making him an attractive option for other programs seeking an experienced guard.

Auburn, meanwhile, may need to prepare for the possibility of his departure. The roster and overall structure of the team changed dramatically from what Pettiford originally signed up for. By his sophomore season, he was the lone returning player from the previous roster, highlighting just how much turnover the program experienced. Additionally, longtime head coach Bruce Pearl stepped away from his traditional role, passing leadership responsibilities to his son, Steven Pearl, which marked a major shift in the program’s direction and identity.

Despite Pettiford’s efforts to recreate the success and energy of prior seasons, the team lacked the same spark. The atmosphere at Neville Arena and the overall performance on the court did not match the highs seen in earlier years under Bruce Pearl’s leadership. While winning the NIT provided a positive ending, it did little to erase the broader disappointment of missing the NCAA Tournament.

Given the current landscape of college basketball where NIL opportunities and competitive positioning play major roles it’s likely that other programs could offer Pettiford stronger financial incentives and a clearer path to immediate national contention. As a result, it would not be surprising if he ultimately decides to transfer to a team better positioned to compete at the highest level right away.
