The Dominican baseball standout admitted that during the resumption of play in 2020 he arrived at training camp significantly overweight around 280 pounds – which he acknowledged was unacceptable for a professional athlete. Recognizing the mistake, Guerrero Jr. issued an apology to his teammates, saying he didn’t come prepared as he should have.
Veteran manager Felipe Alou, who once worked with Guerrero Jr.’s father, expressed relief that the apology was made, but he emphasised that making the same mistake again would erode trust. Alou, a Dominican icon in the sport, reminded the young slugger that possessing talent isn’t enough showing up ready is part of being a professional.
In response, Guerrero Jr. committed to change: he overhauled his diet, cutting out fatty foods and scheduling dinner earlier in the evening. He also ramped up his conditioning, shedding significant weight more than 30 pounds to arrive at spring training in better shape.
In short, Guerrero Jr. recognised a misstep, apologised to those impacted, and then took concrete steps to improve both his physical condition and professional readiness.
