Breaking: Up Next: Cubs vs. Nationals Series Preview

The Chicago Cubs kick off their 2026 campaign at home with a series against an NL East opponent, the Washington Nationals.

The Cubs begin their earliest home opener in franchise history, and as usual, early-season baseball in Chicago comes with unpredictable weather. Thursday’s forecast suggests temperatures dropping from around 60°F into the 40s, with a possible chance of rain that ideally stays away until after the game.

On the Nationals’ side, there’s a wave of change sweeping through the organization. Paul Toboni and Blake Butera are leading a revamped front office and coaching staff, signaling a fresh direction. At just 35 and 33 respectively, they bring a youthful, modern approach to a team that had long maintained stability in leadership.

Washington’s roster reflects that same youth movement, particularly among position players. James Wood and CJ Abrams headline the lineup. Wood struggled late last season and during spring training but still possesses elite raw power. Abrams, despite trade speculation, remains a key piece in the Nationals’ plans.

On the mound, the Nationals have quietly impressed this spring. Cade Cavalli gets the Opening Day start after delivering 14 scoreless innings in preseason action. Armed with a high-velocity fastball, a sharp curve, and a newly added sweeper, Cavalli looks poised for a breakout season.

The rotation also includes some familiar and intriguing names. Miles Mikolas joins the staff alongside Zack Littell and Foster Griffin, the latter returning from a successful stint in Japan.

While expectations for Washington remain modest, the franchise appears to be laying the groundwork for long-term success under its new leadership.

Head-to-head notes:
The Cubs hold a slight historical edge over the Nationals franchise dating back to its days as the Montreal Expos, with improved results since the team relocated to Washington in 2005. Chicago has also performed well at home in recent years, including a 9–4 record hosting Washington from 2021 to 2024.

Projected pitching matchups:

  • Thursday: Matthew Boyd vs. Cade Cavalli
  • Saturday: Cade Horton vs. Miles Mikolas
  • Sunday: Shōta Imanaga vs. Jake Irvin

Game times & broadcast:
All three games are scheduled for 1:20 p.m. CT and will air on Marquee Sports Network.

Outlook:
Given the matchup, the Cubs are in a strong position to win the series and should come away with at least two victories.
