The St. Louis Cardinals may not be far away from seeing one of their most exciting young arms reach the major leagues. At just 21 years old, hard-throwing prospect Liam Doyle is already within striking distance of the big stage.
For fans eager to follow his progress this season, Doyle will begin the 2026 campaign with the Springfield Cardinals at the Double-A level. The team officially announced its Opening Day roster on April 1, confirming his placement after a brief but impressive introduction to pro ball in 2025.
Doyle, who was selected fifth overall in the 2025 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee, wasted little time making an impression after signing. He appeared in two minor league games late last season—one with High-A Palm Beach and another with Double-A Springfield. In his Double-A outing, he delivered two scoreless innings while striking out three batters, offering a glimpse of his potential.
Starting the new season in Double-A isn’t surprising given his late-season promotion, but it does highlight how quickly the organization is moving him along. Widely viewed as a fast-track prospect, Doyle is now just two levels away from the majors, putting him firmly on the radar for a possible call-up sooner rather than later.
While a 2026 debut at Busch Stadium isn’t guaranteed, the growing buzz around Doyle suggests it’s not out of the question especially if he continues to dominate.
His dominance was already evident during his final college season. In 2025, Doyle posted eye-popping numbers at Tennessee, striking out 164 batters over 95 2/3 innings while issuing only 32 walks. Armed with a powerful fastball that some believe could already play at the MLB level, he has all the tools to rise quickly through the system.
Doyle won’t be the only intriguing talent in Springfield. The roster is stacked with several of the Cardinals’ top prospects, including Jurrangelo Cijntje, Deniel Ortiz, Chen-Wei Lin, Braden Davis, Hancel Rincon, and Mason Molina.
With multiple high-upside prospects developing together, Springfield could become a key stop in shaping the future of the Cardinals’ roster. Doyle, along with Cijntje, is viewed as a potential cornerstone for the team’s pitching rotation in the years ahead.
For now, all eyes will be on how quickly he progresses but if his trajectory continues, it may not be long before he makes the leap to the majors.
