The Philadelphia Phillies were dealt an unexpected setback ahead of their matchup with the Arizona Diamondbacks, as promising young pitcher Andrew Painter was ruled out of his scheduled start on Sunday due to a migraine.
Heading into the game, Philadelphia was already navigating uncertainty in the back end of its starting rotation, particularly in the fourth and fifth spots. With ace Zack Wheeler sidelined to begin the season, greater responsibility has fallen on arms like Taijuan Walker and Painter to stabilize the rotation. Walker delivered a solid outing and picked up a win against Arizona on Saturday, setting the stage for Painter to take the mound in the series finale.
However, plans changed shortly before first pitch. According to reports from Todd Zolecki, Painter was scratched from the start after experiencing a migraine, forcing the Phillies to quickly adjust their pitching strategy. In his place, Zach Pop was tapped to start, signaling a likely bullpen-heavy approach for the game.
Painter’s absence is a significant blow in the short term. The 23-year-old, one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, had been looking to rebound from a previous outing in which he allowed four runs against the San Francisco Giants. Instead of making his third start of the season, he is now sidelined, leaving the bullpen to shoulder a heavier workload.
There is, however, a slight silver lining. Reports from Charlotte Varnes suggest Painter could still be available in a limited relief role if needed, even though he isn’t in condition to start.
With a new series against the Chicago Cubs set to begin on April 13, the Phillies will be hoping their remaining starters, including Cristopher Sánchez, can pitch deep into games to avoid overworking the bullpen. For now, though, the team must adjust quickly after losing a key young arm for Sunday’s contest due to an untimely health issue.
