The Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant roster move as they prepare for the return of ace pitcher Zack Wheeler, parting ways with former New York Mets starter Taijuan Walker.

Philadelphia, currently tied with the Mets for the worst record in Major League Baseball, is looking for a spark to turn its season around. Wheeler’s long-awaited season debut scheduled for Saturday against the Atlanta Braves comes at a critical time, especially with the Phillies struggling to stay competitive in their division. In order to clear space on the roster, the team opted to release Walker, whose tenure in Philadelphia ultimately fell short of expectations.

According to reports, Walker’s departure follows a difficult stretch of performances. He posted a 9.13 ERA this season over just 22.1 innings, allowing 23 earned runs the highest total in the league at this stage. The move effectively ends a four-year, $72 million contract that never delivered the consistency the Phillies had hoped for when they signed him.

Walker’s broader stint with Philadelphia paints a similar picture. Across 72 starts and more than 400 innings, he recorded a 4.90 ERA with 290 strikeouts, while also surrendering 73 home runs and issuing 161 walks. Although he showed flashes of reliability, he struggled to maintain steady production in a rotation that needed stability.

Before joining the Phillies, Walker had a more productive run with the Mets, including an All-Star selection in 2021. That season, he made 29 starts and posted a 4.47 ERA, proving himself as a dependable mid-rotation option at the time.

Despite his recent struggles, Walker’s overall MLB career remains respectable. Over 14 seasons, he has made 234 starts, thrown more than 1,300 innings, and compiled a 4.27 career ERA with over 1,100 strikeouts. At 33 years old, he still has experience and durability working in his favor, though his next opportunity may not come easily.

With Wheeler returning to anchor the rotation, the Phillies are clearly prioritizing immediate performance over financial considerations, even as they remain on the hook for the remainder of Walker’s contract. Whether another team takes a chance on Walker remains uncertain he could draw interest on a minor league deal but his future in the majors is now a major question mark as he looks to rebound from a tough chapter in Philadelphia.
