Breaking News: Avery Johnson gains confidence in new Kansas State receiver Josh Manning ahead of 2026 season

Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson is entering the 2026 season with growing confidence in what his new top target, Missouri transfer Josh Manning, could bring to the Wildcats’ offense.

Although their live-game chemistry is still untested, Johnson says early practices have already given him a clear sense of how Manning fits into the passing game. He describes the wide receiver as a physically imposing presence with dependable hands and a strong ability to come down with difficult catches in tight coverage traits that make him an appealing option in high-pressure situations.

The connection between the two players didn’t start in Manhattan. Johnson and Manning were part of the same high school recruiting class, with Johnson ultimately choosing Kansas State while Manning committed to Missouri. Even after taking different college paths, they maintained communication over the years, which helped smooth Manning’s transition when he transferred to K-State this offseason.

Since arriving, Manning has been heavily involved in spring drills and quickly became one of the most active participants in practice. Head coach Collin Klein noted that he has consistently logged significant reps and developed steadily while adjusting to the Wildcats’ system and a demanding defensive front.

On the field, Johnson and Manning spent much of spring working to refine timing and synchronization. Early sessions required some adjustment, but the back half of spring practice showed noticeable improvement as their rhythm began to stabilize and their connection became more natural.

Manning arrives in Manhattan after two seasons at Missouri, where he totaled 42 receptions, 510 yards, and three touchdowns. Kansas State views him as a key piece in replacing production lost to transfers and graduation at the wide receiver position.

Coaches have been particularly encouraged by his athletic profile length, speed, and ability to separate on routes which has translated more effectively as he becomes more comfortable within the offense.

Now both seniors, Johnson and Manning are expected to be central figures in Kansas State’s passing attack, with the program hoping their offseason development carries into a productive on-field partnership when the 2026 season begins.
