Breaking News: Liberatore Leads Cardinals to Dominant Series-Clinching Victory

The St. Louis Cardinals finally put together a complete performance on Sunday night, combining timely hitting, strong pitching, and late-game resilience to secure a convincing 5–1 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Busch Stadium. The win not only sealed a series victory but also offered a rare glimpse of balance and control that has often eluded the Cardinals this season.

For once, St. Louis fans saw both sides of the game click at the same time. Starter Matthew Liberatore delivered one of his most composed outings of the year, while the Cardinals’ lineup came alive early and never truly let the Cubs settle into rhythm. The atmosphere at Busch Stadium was further elevated by the presence of franchise icon Albert Pujols in the broadcast booth, adding a nostalgic layer to an already memorable night.

The Cardinals wasted no time setting the tone against Cubs starter Jordan Wicks. In the opening inning, the lineup came out aggressively, stringing together consecutive hits from JJ Wetherholt, Iván Herrera, and Jordan Walker. Walker’s RBI single brought in Wetherholt to open the scoring, before Alec Burleson capitalized on a fortunate infield popup that dropped in shallow territory, allowing Herrera to score and extend the lead to 2–0.

Unlike many of their previous games this season, the Cardinals did not fade after the early surge. Instead, they doubled down in the third inning with another offensive burst. Wetherholt and Herrera again set the table with back-to-back hits, and although Jordan Walker and Nelson Velázquez were retired in succession, Burleson delivered again this time with a clutch RBI single to left field. Masyn Winn followed with a sharp single up the middle that pushed two more runs across, stretching the lead to a commanding 5–0 advantage.

On the mound, Liberatore provided exactly what St. Louis needed: stability. He worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking only one batter. His ability to consistently retire hitters deep into the game gave the Cardinals’ bullpen a rare cushion to operate with confidence.

After Liberatore exited, newly called-up reliever Hunter Dobbins entered to maintain control. His outing began with immediate adversity, as he surrendered a solo home run to Alex Bregman that cut the deficit to 5–1. However, Dobbins quickly regrouped, striking out Seiya Suzuki and inducing a groundout from Ian Happ to end the inning and prevent further damage.

Both teams threatened in the seventh inning, but neither could capitalize. The Cubs put runners in scoring position after hits from Michael Busch and Michael Conforto, yet Dobbins escaped the jam in impressive fashion, striking out Dansby Swanson after falling behind in the count and forcing Nico Hoerner into a groundout. On the other side, St. Louis also had opportunities to extend their lead but couldn’t convert despite strong baserunning from Wetherholt and patient at-bats from Herrera.

Dobbins continued to impress through the late innings, shutting down Chicago the rest of the way. Aside from the lone home run, he did not allow another baserunner, finishing his outing with multiple strikeouts and no walks an encouraging sign for a bullpen unit that has struggled at times this season.

While the Cubs managed only a single run, the Cardinals’ ability to limit damage and maintain control marked a notable step forward. The combination of early offense, steady starting pitching, and late-game bullpen execution created one of the most complete wins St. Louis has produced in recent weeks.

With the victory secured, the Cardinals now turn their attention to a new challenge as the Texas Rangers arrive at Busch Stadium for the next series. Fans are already anticipating another competitive matchup, with Michael McGreevy scheduled to start for St. Louis against Rangers ace Jacob deGrom.

For now, though, the Cardinals can finally take a breath. After weeks of inconsistency, Sunday night offered a reminder of what this team looks like when both the bats and arms are in sync a performance they will hope to build on as the season continues.
