The West Virginia Mountaineers refused to go quietly on Sunday night, delivering a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive and force a winner-take-all clash in the Morgantown Regional. Facing elimination and trailing late against the Kentucky Wildcats, WVU produced one of its most electrifying finishes of the season, turning what looked like a final inning into a momentum-shifting rally that stunned the opposition.

Kentucky entered the matchup in control after building a 9–6 lead heading into the final frame, already holding one win over the Mountaineers from Saturday. With the Wildcats just three outs away from ending West Virginia’s season, the pressure was firmly on WVU to deliver something extraordinary and they responded with relentless execution under fire.
The rally began as Kentucky reliever Nile Adcock started to lose command, allowing West Virginia to chip away at the deficit. A defensive error, followed by a walk and a clutch single from Tyrus Hall, quickly loaded the bases and forced a pitching change as Jackson Soucie was called in to try and slam the door.
Instead, the momentum continued to swing. A bases-loaded walk to Armani Guzman brought in a crucial run and cut the deficit, reigniting belief inside the Mountaineers’ dugout. Kentucky attempted to stabilize the inning with another pitching change, bringing in Oliver Boone, but WVU only intensified the pressure.
A sacrifice fly from Gavin Kelly brought another run home, trimming the margin to a single run. Then, chaos struck for the Wildcats as a balk from Boone allowed Tyrus Hall to score the tying run, leveling the game at 9–9 and completely flipping the atmosphere inside the stadium.
With the crowd roaring and Kentucky reeling, West Virginia delivered the decisive blow. Paul Schoenfeld stepped to the plate and launched a towering home run that cleared the fence, bringing home himself and Armani Guzman to give WVU an 11–9 lead. The swing sent the home crowd into celebration and effectively sealed one of the most dramatic innings of the tournament.
Kentucky was unable to recover in the bottom half, as West Virginia closed out the game to force a decisive final matchup in the regional. The victory sets up a high-stakes winner-take-all showdown on Monday, with a spot in the Super Regionals on the line.
After the game, Schoenfeld expressed disbelief at the moment, describing the emotional surge of connecting on such a crucial home run while the stadium erupted in celebration, including a loud rendition of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” from the WVU faithful.
Now, the Mountaineers stand just one win away from advancing, carrying renewed momentum into the decisive final game. However, the challenge remains steep, as Kentucky has already used multiple pitchers in the marathon contest, while WVU could potentially receive a boost with star pitcher Maxx Yehl expected to be available after limited action earlier in the weekend.
With both teams pushed to their limits and everything on the line, Monday’s showdown promises another tense chapter in a rapidly unfolding postseason battle one that has already delivered heartbreak, resilience, and unforgettable late-game drama.
