SHOCKWAVES: Deion Sanders Shuts Down Auburn Rumors on…

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has firmly dismissed long-running speculation that he was ever in serious contention for the Auburn Tigers’ head coaching job during the 2022 hiring cycle, stating that there was no meaningful contact between him and the program.

Sanders recently addressed the rumors during a conversation tied to his partnership with Depend and a Men’s Health Month campaign, where he also shared personal reflections on his health journey and the importance of early medical awareness. The discussion naturally shifted to past coaching rumors, including claims that Auburn had interest in bringing him to the Plains during its search for a new head coach.

At the time, media analysts had speculated that Sanders could be a transformative hire for Auburn, particularly due to his elite recruiting impact and his success at Jackson State, where he attracted high-profile transfers and top-tier talent before making the move to Colorado. His ability to reshape rosters and land marquee prospects, including standout players such as Travis Hunter, only fueled those projections.

However, Sanders shut down the narrative entirely, making it clear that no formal outreach ever took place. “Not one call, not one email, nothing,” he stated, directly rejecting the idea that Auburn engaged him in any real discussions during that coaching search.

The rumor mill had previously intensified amid Auburn’s turbulent 2022 coaching search, which ultimately ended with the hiring of Hugh Freeze after several other reported candidates were considered. Sanders, meanwhile, had already begun transitioning from Jackson State to Colorado, where he would later take over the Buffaloes program.

He also clarified that while there was some legitimate interest from other programs—most notably USF during that same hiring cycle—Auburn was never part of that conversation in any official capacity. Sanders acknowledged some truth to other reported discussions but reiterated that the Auburn connection was not among them.

Looking back, Sanders’ eventual move to Colorado proved to be a defining moment in college football, as he quickly transformed the program into a national storyline. Meanwhile, Auburn moved forward under Freeze, and the idea of Sanders leading the Tigers remains purely speculative.

Despite the recurring rumors over the years, Sanders made it clear that his name being tied to Auburn was never grounded in reality, describing the situation as nothing more than outside speculation rather than any actual negotiations or contact.
