The Texas Rangers made another notable roster adjustment on Friday, reshuffling their lineup by sending infielder Josh Smith to Triple-A in order to open a spot for former top prospect Jarred Kelenic. The move reflects both a shift in short-term roster strategy and a continued search for offensive consistency as Texas evaluates its depth during the season.
Smith, who played a key supporting role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series-winning campaign, had remained a regular presence in the lineup but has struggled to maintain production at the plate in 2026. His recent offensive decline ultimately led to the decision to option him to the minors as the team looks for more impactful bats in key situations.
In his place, the Rangers are giving another opportunity to Kelenic, a once highly touted first-round selection still trying to establish himself at the major league level. Now 26, the left-handed outfielder arrives in Texas after a turbulent stretch across multiple organizations, including brief stops with the Seattle Mariners, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago White Sox system.
Kelenic’s recent MLB numbers have been inconsistent, with limited production and difficulty sustaining contact at the plate. Over the past several seasons, his overall offensive output has fallen below league-average levels, reflected in an OPS that has struggled to keep pace with expectations set during his early prospect days. Despite those challenges, teams continue to show interest in his potential upside due to his age and athletic profile.
Before his latest promotion, Kelenic showed signs of resurgence in Triple-A, where he posted strong numbers over a short stretch, including a high batting average and multiple home runs in just over a dozen games. That performance helped convince the Rangers that another opportunity at the major league level was warranted.
Ultimately, Texas is hoping the change will spark offensive improvement as they look to stabilize their lineup. The organization is betting that a fresh start and consistent playing time could help Kelenic rediscover the form that once made him one of the most highly regarded young hitters in baseball, while also reshaping the roster balance as the season progresses.
