The Kentucky Wildcats have reportedly parted ways with wide receiver Hardley Gilmore, bringing an unexpected end to the talented pass catcher’s latest stint with the program.
Gilmore was dismissed from the Kentucky football team before the start of fall camp, according to a report from the Lexington Herald-Leader. A Kentucky spokesperson confirmed that the wide receiver is no longer with the program, with the departure reportedly stemming from a violation of team rules.
The move comes as a surprise because Gilmore had been expected to remain part of Kentucky’s receiving corps under head coach Will Stein. Instead, the Wildcats will now enter the 2026 season without a player who had already experienced several twists and turns during his college career.
This is not the first time Gilmore has departed from Kentucky. His college career has been marked by injuries, transfers and multiple decisions to return to the Wildcats. However, this latest separation appears to be much more definitive.
Gilmore originally entered the Kentucky program as part of the 2024 recruiting class after reclassifying from the 2025 class. His freshman season was interrupted by injury, causing him to miss the first five games of the campaign. He eventually appeared in seven contests and recorded six receptions for 153 yards and one touchdown.
Despite seeing limited action, Gilmore showed enough potential to attract interest from another Power Four program. Following the 2024 season, he transferred to Nebraska and spent the spring with the Huskers.
However, his time in Lincoln did not last long. Gilmore ultimately returned to Kentucky ahead of the 2025 season and resumed his career with the Wildcats.
During his sophomore campaign, he saw considerably more action, appearing in 12 games and earning five starts. Gilmore finished the season with 28 receptions for 313 yards and one touchdown, giving Kentucky another experienced option in its passing game.
His future with the Wildcats became uncertain again following the 2025 season and the departure of longtime head coach Mark Stoops. Gilmore entered the transfer portal and eventually committed to Baylor, seemingly preparing for yet another change of scenery.
Instead, he reversed course and decided to remain in Lexington, choosing to play for new head coach Will Stein.
That decision now appears to have come to an abrupt end.
For Kentucky, Gilmore’s dismissal creates another question at wide receiver just as the Wildcats prepare for the upcoming season. His experience within the program and familiarity with the offense could have made him a useful veteran presence, particularly after already navigating multiple changes during his college career.
For Gilmore, meanwhile, the next step could be especially important. With his previous experience at Kentucky, Nebraska and Baylor, he has already demonstrated that he can attract interest from other programs. Whether another school gives him an opportunity will likely depend on how teams evaluate his talent and the circumstances surrounding his latest departure.
The Wildcats will now have to move forward without him, while Gilmore faces another uncertain chapter in a college career that has already included several dramatic turns.
At just the beginning of the 2026 season, both sides now have a major question to answer: What comes next?
