The Philadelphia Phillies have been hit with another wave of injury concerns at a particularly important point in the season, with outfielder Derek Hill and rookie pitcher Andrew Painter both leaving Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
The Phillies suffered a disappointing loss to Washington in an extra-inning contest, but the final score was not the only concern coming out of the game. The health of two players who have become increasingly important to Philadelphia’s roster quickly became a major talking point.
Philadelphia entered the post-trade-deadline stretch with questions surrounding its roster construction. The organization acquired Luis Arraez in a notable move, but it did not add another starting pitcher despite the rotation being one of the team’s biggest areas of concern. That decision has placed even more responsibility on young right-hander Andrew Painter, who has been asked to develop into a dependable fifth starter.
Now, the Phillies are hoping neither injury develops into a significant setback.
Derek Hill Suffers Shoulder Contusion
Hill was forced to leave the Nationals game after a frightening collision with the center-field wall. The outfielder was attempting to make a play on a go-ahead two-run triple by CJ Abrams when he crashed hard into the wall.
Hill had entered the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and was later used defensively, but the collision forced Philadelphia to remove him for further evaluation.
Interim manager Don Mattingly later revealed that Hill was dealing with a shoulder contusion. The Phillies planned additional testing to determine the severity of the injury and how long the outfielder might be unavailable.
The timing is particularly unfortunate because Hill has provided valuable depth since joining Philadelphia. He has hit .268 with five home runs and has supplied the team with useful production both at the plate and in the field.
Hill’s role has become even more important because of the Phillies’ outfield situation. Following the arrival of Arraez, the club has made significant adjustments to its defensive alignment, including moving Bryce Harper back into the outfield. Losing another capable outfielder could therefore create additional pressure on the roster.
Hill has also shown an ability to deliver in important moments, making his availability valuable as Philadelphia continues its push toward October.
Painter Leaves After Four Innings
Painter’s situation initially appeared even more concerning because of the importance of his role in the rotation.
The highly regarded rookie was recalled to help stabilize a starting staff that has needed additional depth. His outing against Washington began with some difficulty, but the Phillies became increasingly concerned about his physical condition after he experienced tightness in his left hamstring.
Painter reportedly slipped while delivering a pitch during the first inning, prompting Philadelphia’s medical staff to monitor him closely throughout the remainder of his outing. The discomfort became more noticeable after the fourth inning, leading the club to remove him after only four innings.
The encouraging news is that the injury does not currently appear to be severe.
Painter reportedly believes he will be able to make his next scheduled start, and the Phillies remain hopeful that the hamstring issue will not force him to miss significant time.
That would be a major relief for Philadelphia.
Painter’s Health Could Be Crucial to Phillies’ Rotation
The Phillies did not acquire another starting pitcher at the trade deadline, leaving Painter with an increasingly important role as the club’s fifth starter.
Although his 2026 season has been challenging, Philadelphia still believes Painter can develop into a reliable option. His return to the rotation is particularly important because the team cannot simply go to the trade market for another starter now that the deadline has passed.
The Phillies could potentially turn to the minor leagues if Painter is unable to pitch, but that would create another layer of uncertainty for a team trying to compete deep into the season.
Philadelphia has already experimented with creative pitching solutions, including bullpen-heavy games, but relying on relievers to cover large portions of games is difficult to sustain over the long term.
Painter’s ability to remain healthy and provide consistent innings could therefore make a significant difference during the final stretch of the season.
Phillies Cannot Afford More Injuries
The combined situations involving Hill and Painter come at an especially inconvenient time for Philadelphia.
The Phillies remain in the postseason race and are holding a Wild Card position, but they still have plenty of work to do if they want to secure a strong playoff position. The club is also chasing Atlanta and cannot afford to lose key contributors for an extended period.
Hill’s absence would weaken an already unsettled outfield, while Painter missing time would put even more strain on a rotation that was not strengthened at the trade deadline.
The Phillies have also made several roster changes following the deadline, releasing a number of players as they reshape their organization for the stretch run. With October approaching, the margin for error is becoming smaller.
For Mattingly and the Phillies, the immediate objective is simply to get their players healthy and back on the field.
The encouraging news is that neither Hill nor Painter currently appears headed for a lengthy absence. Hill is dealing with a shoulder contusion that requires further evaluation, while Painter’s hamstring tightness appears manageable enough for him to potentially make his next start.
If both players can return quickly, Philadelphia may be able to absorb the latest injury scares without suffering a major setback. But with the postseason race heating up and the trade market now closed, the Phillies can ill afford another significant injury to their already stretched roster.
The pressure is now on the existing roster to deliver. Painter must continue developing into the dependable starter Philadelphia needs, while Hill’s return would provide another valuable option for an outfield that has already undergone significant changes.
For a Phillies team with postseason ambitions, the hope is simple: the injury bug has done enough damage already.
