The Washington Nationals delivered a statement victory on Monday night, silencing one of baseball’s most dangerous lineups with a 4-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies at Nationals Park. After dropping three of their previous four games, Washington bounced back behind a dominant performance from starter Foster Griffin and timely offensive contributions from several key hitters.

Luis Garcia Jr. and Curtis Mead supplied the power with home runs, while Dylan Crews, James Wood, and Keibert Ruiz each collected a double and a single to help fuel the Nationals’ attack. Nasim Nunez continued his impressive stretch at the plate, recording two hits to extend his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 14 consecutive contests. Meanwhile, CJ Abrams saw his three-game home run streak come to an end.
Griffin turned in one of his best outings of the season, improving to 8-2 after allowing just one run on four hits across 7 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out nine batters and issued only one walk, continuing a remarkable run in which he has pitched at least five innings while surrendering no more than one earned run in each of his last four starts. Clayton Beeter closed out the game in the ninth inning to secure his sixth save of the year.
Philadelphia entered the contest with momentum after winning four of its previous six games, but the Nationals’ pitching staff successfully neutralized the Phillies’ biggest stars. Brandon Marsh provided the lone offensive highlight for Philadelphia with a seventh-inning solo home run, yet sluggers Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper were both held in check. Schwarber came into the game having blasted four home runs over his previous two contests, while Harper had homered in back-to-back games, but neither was able to leave the yard against Washington’s pitchers.
The Phillies used opener Tim Mayza, who allowed one run in the first inning before giving way to recently recalled Alan Rangel. Rangel settled in and surrendered just one additional run over five innings, but the Nationals gradually built enough offense to stay in control. After James Wood doubled and later scored on Dylan Crews’ RBI single in the first inning, Garcia added a solo homer in the second. Philadelphia threatened in the fifth but came away empty-handed thanks to a strong defensive play by Mead at third base.
The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following Marsh’s home run that trimmed the deficit to 2-1, Wood opened the Nationals’ half of the inning with a single before Curtis Mead crushed his 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot that restored Washington’s cushion and effectively sealed the victory. Combined with Griffin’s dominant outing, the late homer ensured that the Nationals shut down Philadelphia’s high-powered offense and snapped the Phillies’ momentum in impressive fashion.
