The New York Rangers are expected to be one of the more active teams this offseason as they continue reshaping their roster following a partial retooling last year. With several veterans reportedly available in trade discussions and questions surrounding depth on the blue line, the organization is also weighing potential low-risk additions in free agency to strengthen its defensive group.
One name now being linked to the Rangers is Winnipeg Jets defenseman and former first-round pick Ville Heinola. According to a recent report by The Athletic, Heinola has been identified as a potential target who could provide value on a short-term, low-cost deal as a Group 6 unrestricted free agent this summer.
Analyst Peter Baugh highlighted Heinola as a player worth considering, noting his puck-moving ability and offensive instincts from the blue line—traits that align with the Rangers’ preferred style of play under their current system. Despite limited NHL opportunities, Heinola still carries the pedigree of a 2019 first-round selection and remains just 25 years old, making him an intriguing developmental gamble.
Although Heinola has only appeared in 58 NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets, he has produced steady offensive numbers at the AHL level with the Manitoba Moose, recording 26 goals and 124 points across 198 appearances. However, he has yet to fully translate that production into a consistent NHL role, leading to uncertainty about his long-term fit in Winnipeg.
That uncertainty is why a fresh start is being viewed as a possible opportunity for both player and team. A one-year “prove-it” contract with the Rangers would carry minimal risk, while offering Heinola a chance to compete for a more stable role or at least serve as valuable depth during the season. At worst, he would provide an experienced recall option in case of injuries; at best, he could compete for a spot on a Rangers left side that still lacks consistency.
Beyond Heinola, the Rangers are widely expected to explore additional options to improve their defense this summer, particularly on the left side. Other potential free-agent targets include Mario Ferraro, Ryan Shea, and Logan Stanley, while trade possibilities such as Bowen Byram could also be on the table.
Still, Heinola’s combination of youth, draft pedigree, and untapped potential makes him an appealing candidate for a team looking to find undervalued assets. As the Rangers continue evaluating their offseason strategy, interest in the former Jets first-round pick could signal a broader push to add upside and depth without significant financial risk.
