The Texas Rangers have been dealt a significant setback to their pitching staff, as right-hander Jack Leiter is expected to miss an extended period after undergoing ankle surgery. What initially appeared to be a routine injured-list stint has now evolved into a much more serious concern for a Rangers team that has largely avoided major rotation injuries throughout the season.

Leiter was officially placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right ankle posterior impingement after being slated to start later in the week. While veteran Cal Quantrill has been tapped to fill his spot in the rotation, further medical evaluations revealed a more complicated issue. According to reports, Leiter underwent arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to remove a loose body from his ankle. Although the Rangers remain hopeful he can return before the season concludes, current projections suggest he could be sidelined until at least August, leaving a sizable void in the starting rotation.
The injury traces back to an unusual incident during a start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 22. While attempting to back up an errant throw, Leiter rolled his ankle after stepping on a bat left near the on-deck circle. Despite continuing to pitch through the discomfort for weeks, the lingering effects clearly impacted his performance.
Since the injury occurred, Leiter has struggled to find consistency. The 26-year-old owns a 3-7 record with a 5.29 ERA across 80 innings this season, numbers that fall well short of expectations. His fastball velocity dipped noticeably, command issues became more frequent, and walks piled up. Since early May, he has issued multiple free passes in every start, a troubling trend that contributed to several difficult outings. Long innings and a susceptibility to home runs further complicated what many anticipated would be a breakout campaign following his strong finish to last season.
The timing is particularly frustrating for both Leiter and the Rangers. Entering the year, many believed the former top prospect was poised to establish himself as a dependable fixture in the rotation. While flashes of his elite talent and pitch arsenal have remained evident, he was never able to put together the sustained success the club envisioned before the injury forced him off the mound.
Replacing Leiter will not be easy. Quantrill is set to make his first start of the season after serving primarily in a long-relief role, where he has posted a solid 3.68 ERA and a perfect 3-0 record. Young right-hander Jose Corniell is another potential option after earning a call-up following Leiter’s move to the injured list, though Texas’ rotation depth remains limited.
Help may eventually arrive in the coming weeks. Jordan Montgomery has begun his rehab assignment and recently made his first appearance in Double-A Frisco, but he remains several weeks away from rejoining the major-league club. Cody Bradford is also progressing toward a return and could soon become a rotation candidate.
Even with Leiter’s uneven results this season, his absence represents a major blow for a Rangers team with postseason aspirations. The club will now rely heavily on frontline starters Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi to stabilize the rotation, while MacKenzie Gore and Kumar Rocker take on increased responsibility as Texas attempts to navigate a critical stretch without one of its most talented young arms.
