The Texas Rangers are suddenly facing an unexpected challenge in their starting rotation after Jack Leiter’s injury turned into a longer-term absence. What was initially expected to be a brief stint on the injured list changed dramatically on Tuesday when Leiter underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery to remove a loose body that had been causing discomfort since April. While the procedure is expected to resolve the issue, there is no firm timetable for his return, leaving Texas scrambling to identify a replacement starter for the first time this season.
The Rangers’ 6-4 loss to the Miami Marlins may have doubled as a live evaluation session for potential rotation candidates. With another opening in the schedule approaching Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays, the organization is weighing its options and searching for a reliable fifth starter.
Initially, reports suggested Texas would once again deploy Tyler Alexander as an opener, but the club shifted plans and handed the start to veteran right-hander Cal Quantrill. Signed to a minor-league contract before the season as rotational insurance, Quantrill has spent most of the year serving as a multi-inning reliever after earning a promotion in April. However, his extensive starting experience made him a logical candidate to audition for Leiter’s vacant spot.
Quantrill, who owns 150 career starts and a 50-46 major-league record, delivered a steady performance against Miami. The veteran worked two innings, allowing just one run on three hits while throwing strikes efficiently and avoiding walks. His outing reinforced the possibility that Texas could transition him back into a full-time starting role, especially given his success stretching out as a starter with Triple-A Round Rock earlier this year.
Following Quantrill, top pitching prospect Jose Corniell received an opportunity to showcase his potential. Recently promoted from Triple-A, Corniell entered with hopes of providing several innings and strengthening his case for a rotation spot. Instead, the 23-year-old endured a difficult major-league debut for the season, surrendering five earned runs on seven hits across 3.1 innings. He also issued two walks and allowed a pair of home runs, though he managed three strikeouts. The outing contrasted sharply with his strong minor-league performances and may have complicated his bid for a permanent role in the rotation.
The Rangers now find themselves with limited internal options. Reliever Jacob Latz has emerged as too valuable in the bullpen to consider moving back into a starting role, while there are few other ready-made starters on the active roster. Reinforcements are coming, but not immediately. Veteran left-hander Jordan Montgomery continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery and remains at least several weeks away from returning to the major leagues.
For now, Texas appears likely to continue evaluating multiple candidates as it searches for the best solution. Tuesday’s game provided the first glimpse into the competition, but the Rangers may need several more auditions before determining who can adequately fill the void left by Leiter’s absence and help stabilize the rotation during a crucial stretch of the season.
