The Philadelphia Phillies have engineered one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Major League Baseball this season, transforming themselves from an early-season disappointment into a legitimate National League contender. While the club has climbed the standings thanks to an impressive resurgence, the front office still has important work to do before the MLB trade deadline if it hopes to make a deep postseason run.
Just a few months ago, Philadelphia appeared to be headed in the wrong direction after falling 10 games below the .500 mark in April. Since then, however, the Phillies have completely reversed their fortunes. Strong performances from their experienced core of veteran stars have fueled the comeback, allowing them to re-enter the playoff race and even gain ground on division rivals like the Atlanta Braves.
Although the recent success has been encouraging, the Phillies are far from a complete team. Their improved record has masked a few lingering weaknesses that could become major concerns once October arrives. Among those issues, the bullpen stands out as the area most in need of reinforcement.
MLB insider Mark Feinsand recently identified Philadelphia’s relief corps as one of the club’s biggest priorities ahead of the trade deadline, suggesting that adding bullpen depth could significantly strengthen its championship aspirations.
Bullpen Depth Remains a Concern
Unlike previous seasons, the Phillies no longer have questions about the closer role. That problem appears to have been solved by Jhoan Duran, who has quickly developed into one of baseball’s elite ninth-inning pitchers since joining Philadelphia last season.
Duran has consistently delivered in high-pressure situations, providing stability at the back end of the bullpen and giving manager Rob Thomson confidence whenever the team carries a late lead. His dominant performances have made him one of the Phillies’ greatest strengths.
The challenge, however, lies in getting the ball to Duran.
The relievers responsible for the seventh and eighth innings have struggled to provide consistent production throughout the season. Injuries have only worsened the situation, particularly with Brad Keller currently sidelined on the injured list. Without Keller, Philadelphia has lacked dependable setup options, forcing the bullpen into heavier workloads and exposing its lack of depth.
While the bullpen has managed to survive during the team’s recent winning streak, it has largely been an average unit outside of Duran’s dominance. If the Phillies hope to compete with the National League’s best teams in October, they will need more reliable arms capable of protecting late-game leads before handing the ball to their All-Star closer.
Left-Handed Relief Should Be a Priority
Fortunately for Philadelphia, the trade market typically offers plenty of experienced relief pitchers each summer. However, proven bullpen arms often become some of the most sought-after players before the deadline, meaning the Phillies could face stiff competition and potentially pay a premium to acquire the help they need.
One area that deserves particular attention is adding another dependable left-handed reliever.
José Alvarado has not delivered the level of consistency the Phillies expected this season, leaving the bullpen without a trustworthy southpaw in key situations. Acquiring a quality left-handed arm would provide manager Rob Thomson with greater flexibility in late innings, especially against dangerous left-handed hitters during the postseason.
A reliable left-handed reliever could prove especially valuable in potential playoff matchups against stars like Shohei Ohtani, whose ability to change a game with one swing makes specialized bullpen matchups critical.
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Phillies appear to have addressed their long-standing closer issue thanks to Duran. Now, the organization must focus on strengthening the rest of the bullpen. Adding experienced setup relievers and another dependable left-hander could be the final pieces needed to transform Philadelphia from a playoff contender into a serious World Series threat.
